Well.. I made it out around 7:00 pm on pool 1 and managed to get to the lock just in time to see the doors close to go down, and of course another barge waiting to come up. I poked around a couple different places for an hour or so.. few nibbles, no takers.

7:50 rolled around and the traffic cleared from the lock, and I was allowed to enter.. just to hear a paddleboat radio from upriver(over loud speaker) to hold the lock for him.. so.. I’m already tied off in the lock. I peek over at the depth finder and its reading a solid 64.3 feet of water.. for some reason, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to drop a line. 20 minutes later the paddleboat pulled into the lock and was getting tied in. For some reason, my instincts told me to look over at my rod.. sure enough, I was getting a *tap, tap, tap*.. I picked it up and felt some resistence.. set the hook into nothing 64.3 feet down.. I reeled up, rebaited my hook, and dropped it down. At this time the lock doors are closing.. I looked to my rod, preparing to take in line as the water dropped and suddenly.. * tug, tug, tug * .. I set the hook and to my surprise.. a fish was on.. About a minute later I got the cat up from the bottom of the ocean it seemed(of course 50 people watching on paddle boat) and I netted the nice 7 pound channel on the end of the line.. I guess it was a reward for waiting so long.

The lock doors open.. I hurry to my planned desination for the evening.. the end of a Jetti and a large current seam in an area I know to hold fish. I put a fresh bait on and toss it out and immediately have a bite.. aired out again… shortly after Black Sportsman pulled up in his car, so I hit the shore to pick him up and head back out to *the spot*. We no sooner through the anchors and Manny(Black Sportsman) was getting hit on the cut bait.. moments after, I had a decent channel on the line around 6 pounds. I rebaited the hook with some fresh cut and through it out.. 2 minutes later was a good bite.. that one turned out to be a 16 pound flathead. We admired the fish like we never saw one before(hard to come by lately).. set it free and went back to fishing. Shortly after Manny got a nice 13 lb channel cat, and he caught naother nice channel in there somewhere.. so did I… Fish were biting.

Around 9:30 we get the call from Sherry saying she is coming down.. so we shifted our efforts to shore fishing an area fairly near. We managed a few more Channels, and a small flathead before we turned in.

The shore fishing was slower, but somewhat productive. I am pretty sure the toll of the evening was 9 channels, and 2 flatheads… would have been more if SHERRY would have caught anything to add to it

It was a nice night to be on the river, and enough action to keep a person interested in the fishing. I had a couple live baits on tonight to absolutely no action.. everything was fresh cut bait.

Sounds like you guys hit a gold mine considering what it’s been lately!

Good job Sherry! You have to let us guys get a big head again after putting us in our place a week ago!

I’ve often thought of fishing in a lock…but I’m normally the guy hanging on to the ropes.

’bout time you got Manny out there too!

No need to hang onto the ropes if you tie off to one of the big mooring(sp?) canisters..

I am really glad I hit a new area of the river last night. I rediscovered lots of areas to fish for cats that get no pressure at all… I used to fish the area for walleyes and smallies years back.. but never focused on cats from the boat at the time.

Next time, I will not forget to bring the camera!

Good to see you guys got out on some fish. I took the same approch a few weeks ago going back to some areas that I knew held fish(eyes) but left the little poles at home . We have been getting the same results with the cut bait lately. But when you do get one to hit the live bait they have been nice ones.

We were out on tuesday night and the olny hit I had on the live bait was a nice fish. when the fish got about 10 feet out the hood let go Its been my luck lately. But we have been catching flats on cut also. Mainly on the large head pieces. Nothing over 20 lbs but some nice fish just under.

Just for the record here.. Black Sportsmans big fish of the year was on cutbait.. the head of a medium sucker minnow .. 37# flat .. big ones will grab it if they want it.

Its been strange out there lately.. I have more confidence in cutbait right now for sure.. need to pick off a few channels, but the flats will take it right now… I will be out later testing my theory some more.

You had to add that in, huh Dave? You could have just pretended I didn’t come along or something.

No kidding, Brian! I wouldn’t want you men to CRY or anything. I can’t show you guys up EVERY time.

Well .. another good night on the river tonight. I made it out with Hanson, and another fishing local and we hit a spot and put the cutbait theory to work.

We fished from 7:00 to 11:00 and we managed to put 24 fish in the boat.. 4 of which were flatheads, only 1 on live bait(baby bullhead).. and it took a long time to get that run.

None of the flats were big tonight(area not known for big flats).. the channels averaged around 5 pounds, with the largest about 10.. nothing huge, but it was a good time!

Ok Dave, I understand that you don’t want to post pictures with Hanson in them..’cause you don’t want to scare the kid…but you could just capture the fish! Sorry Chris, sometimes I just can’t help myself

Sounds like you guys had a great night…and home early.

PS Do all locks have mooring canisters? I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen them before..

I did see a cruiser tie off to the ropes once while lowering…I’m guessing that guy won’t do that again… It didn’t come out of the water..but sure had a tip to it!

All the locks up this way have them.. I dont know what they’re proper name would be.. but its a giant floating canister within the wall.. The barges tie off to them.. there is a giant spike on the top of it, and a couple hooks on the bottom.

Much easier than having 40′ of rope in the boat after being raised.. I am sure all locks have them.. I cant see 30 guys holding on trying to keep a 600 ton barge in place by hand lines..

    However..

I could visualize Brina hanging onto a rope in one hand trying to reach for his rod with the other when it was peeling over in the holder… Trying to fight a fish while fumbling with a rope.

What a difference a day can make.

I made it out tonight with Manny and Ralph.. managed 3 fish.. 1 was from shore. Every place we stopped we would get a couple nibbles and that was it.

However.. Sherry spent the evening on shore with another friend and his sister and the sister managed a 10, and a 16 pound channel.

I guess if your only going to get 2 bites in an evening.. them are the 2 to get. She just got her fishing license today.

Yes, we had a fun evening on shore. It was fun to see Jeff’s “little” sister catch those fish… and watch big brother Jeff lose 2 fish. But most of all it was worth the trip just to watch Jeff sit down on his van seat on shore… and promptly fall right over backwards onto the ground.
Kathy and I had a good laugh out of that.

It was a nice, but chilly night. And we had plenty of entertainment watching 3 dummies buzzing from here to there in a boat trying to find the fish.

Kathy and her first Channel ever… 10 lbs.

Kathy and her second Channel ever, weighing in at 16 lbs. Big brother Jeff was there to assist.

Here’s the Channel that Manny (blacksportsman) caught when they joined us on shore at the end of the night.

Manny caught one other Channel out of the boat. And Dave got one out of the boat as well.

I had a few bites, but couldn’t hook em. I was just the photographer last night, but that’s ok.

Ralph… I wish you would have had better luck last night. After 2 weeks off you should have been allowed to catch SOMETHING!

Nice pictures and great fish…especially for the first one!

    “Three dummbies in a boat….”

That HAD to hurt….but not quite as bad as a 10 and 16 from shore!

    Good job guys…and gals!
