It was hard to decide where to go catten last night. With the warm water on the Croix and Turks report of a hot Channel Cat bite, I felt I should work on a fish for the Big Louie contest out of Beanies. But with the flow up a bit on P3, the thought of a few flatheads won out.
It was my wife’s turn to cook last night so we drove separately to the Catfish Bar in Afton. They change their hamburger meat to ground chuck roast a while back and they are pretty darn good now. Like many places, they have been struggling with enough help. We were lucky last night, not to busy and Jo our server was great!
Headed down to P3 and checked out a couple spots with some cut bait and a live bullhead while it was still light…not a nibble. I notice I was getting rather damp just setting out the rods and thought if this wind doesn’t pick up…the skeeter could be “tick” tonight… Dusk was approaching fast with the cloud cover in the west, so I moved into an area that I’ve fished before, but move in a little closer to the snags. I did a little casting with just a no-roll on to see where the snags ended and where I would have a chance to pull a hog out…if I was lucky enough to tie into one. Thought I should check the forecast for storms while mapping out the area. Nope no storms reported by the National Weather Service…just HOT.
I was all set up by 8:50, thought I would relax a moment, but the skeeters where starting to move in. Kinda forgot about them when I heard the music of the flathead dance…”thounnnggg” came from my rod holder…and then the sound of the clicker. At 9:00 my first 7 pounder was in the boat.
