It was hard to decide where to go catten last night. With the warm water on the Croix and Turks report of a hot Channel Cat bite, I felt I should work on a fish for the Big Louie contest out of Beanies. But with the flow up a bit on P3, the thought of a few flatheads won out.

It was my wife’s turn to cook last night so we drove separately to the Catfish Bar in Afton. They change their hamburger meat to ground chuck roast a while back and they are pretty darn good now. Like many places, they have been struggling with enough help. We were lucky last night, not to busy and Jo our server was great!

Headed down to P3 and checked out a couple spots with some cut bait and a live bullhead while it was still light…not a nibble. I notice I was getting rather damp just setting out the rods and thought if this wind doesn’t pick up…the skeeter could be “tick” tonight… Dusk was approaching fast with the cloud cover in the west, so I moved into an area that I’ve fished before, but move in a little closer to the snags. I did a little casting with just a no-roll on to see where the snags ended and where I would have a chance to pull a hog out…if I was lucky enough to tie into one. Thought I should check the forecast for storms while mapping out the area. Nope no storms reported by the National Weather Service…just HOT.

I was all set up by 8:50, thought I would relax a moment, but the skeeters where starting to move in. Kinda forgot about them when I heard the music of the flathead dance…”thounnnggg” came from my rod holder…and then the sound of the clicker. At 9:00 my first 7 pounder was in the boat.

With a kiss on the forehead, back into the water she went. I started looking for a long sleeved shirt to help combat the ever growing swarm of skeeters, but before I could get to the front of the boat… I was asked my an unknown partner to dance again….this time, the clicker was making a steady but very slow tic……..tic…….tic… after the bite. On my way to the rod I was thinking with that kind a bite…this could be Ms Right. In setting the hook, I realize that she was just a little to young for me…just over 13 pounds…but man she splashed, rolled and kicked up water on the surface! By 9:15 I had two fish boated and I’m thinking it’s going to be a good night…NEVER THINK THAT!

The mayflies were starting their secondary hatch…not as heavy as the first hatch a couple weeks ago, but just enough to hurt a bit on the way home.

In a hurry to bait up and get my line back in the water…I forgot the golden catfishers rule. In case you don’t know it…read it, learn it and DON”T FORGET IT!

Admit it Brian. Your wife thought anything that stinks that bad has to be good cat bait. So she decided to “hook you up!”

I hate to laugh at your misfortune, but those are the funniest pictures I’ve ever seen!

Those are the pictures you look at in 5-10 years and still laugh heartily at!

I’m sure at the time it wasn’t very funny though. I’m guessing quite painful too.

I see alot of people downtown going for that exact same look! You could be a trendsetter, introduce the “alt” crowd to fishing!!!

By the way, you are welcome for the pliers. Rapala has that flat part on the plier for flattening barbs. Personally, I wouldn’t have done it the way you did. Feeding the hook and line all the way through adds bacteria from the mighty clean Sippi.
Did the bandaids hold for the trip home?
What do you suppose the guys on the dredge thought when they heard your SOS call over the radio?
Glad I could help. Don’t do it again!

You NEED to send those pics to PETA. Say “I wanted to see how much pain I was subjecting these fish to, as it turns out, it doesnt hurt a bit! It is just like a mosquito bite.”
