Are you supposed to catch a 30 pounder every time out???

Got this guy last night, in the SAME SPOT the last two big ones came out of the last two times…..(I think I’m gonna call it the “honey hole” )

31#…..on my new scale none the less…..and he was definatly smaller than the one from thursday .

We also got two smaller fish (6# and a 8#) in the boat and missed or lost 5 other runs

    Fun night

The only thing bigger than the kitty is your smile!

But are you kissing them before you release ’em!

How deep and what amount of current do you have in your honey hole? Woody cover or rocks? Pretty good when you can get that many hits this time of year.

    Nice fish Jake
I bet it was a blast being able to use the new scale

As far as a 30 pounder on ever outting….good luck with that, and if it keeps happening….make room in the boat cause I’m a coming

The honey hole is actually on the up-stream side of an island and adjecent to a backwater cut, so there is a bit of current. It’s only about 8-10′ deep, but has quite a few BIG dead falls in it (not snaggy or narly stuff, just big main trunks sticking out of the bottom).

The honey hole has only produced one bite the last 3 nights, but all have been in this size range……the other snags I fish seem to be more stick filled (recently toppled with big nasty roots and branches) and I seem to get more fish/runs at these places, but they have all been smaller fish (less than 10 pounds)……is there something to this???

I also noticed that if there is a string of snags along a particular strech, the first one seems to hold the fish (kind of like walleyes on a strech of wingdams ). I assume this has something to do with the current also?

    AHHHHH……a pattern emerages

I guess I spoke too confidently too soon ……Got the Big Ol’ Skunkeroony last night……tried some new water (thought I best give the honey hole a rest)…….not so much as a nibble …….my buddy managed to bust the tip off my new rod too

Giving your honey hole some time to breath might be a good idea.. other times its areas that fish hold, or move through in seasonal patterns. THere was one spot earlier this year I fished nearly every night with success for almost 2 months, often very successful. The fish would not feed much when several people were fishing, or the bite times would change.

I think a lot is dictated by the number of fish using an area.. your honey hole might have 5 fish frequenting it, or it could have 100 fish.. no way to tell. You may be surprised on how much it can produce.. or it could be done already.. all you can do is live and learn, the fish will teach you.

Got out again last night….started at a new spot I found that had some very unqiue water….it was actually the inside tip of a closing dam that stopped 30′ from shore……the trough was about 20′ deep and it had nice wood along the shore. VERY PROMISING

I ended up pulling a 10# channel out of there (first ever on live bait ) and my buddy lost one half way to the boat (I didn’t think 80# braid was supposed to break? ).

Anywho…..the night went dry after that…….UNTIL……..we hit the HONEY HOLE .

It was about 11:45 when my buddy thinks something is playing with his bait ……while I’m coaching him on what to do (not much of a fisherman), my bait gets slammed!!! I pretty much say screw him and grab my rod and start the fight (he sets the hook into nothing ).

Not quite as big as previous honey hole pigs (a touch over 15#), but that’s four fish in four trips from the same spot ….GOTTA LOVE IT!!!

I’m telling ya! Keeping the hat on the RIGHT way…leads to success!

    Nice fish Jake!

(check the last 5 feet including the leader, rocks reduce 80 pound braid to almost nothing)
