Plans changed three times tonight…but sometimes that’s the way it is! The last change of plans came with my favorite #1 wife said it was going to be raining by 9 pm. So as I was pulling out of the driveway heading to P3, I got this itch to go on the Croix. I haven’t been there in so long I forgot it was there!
Just a beautiful night! These are the nights that I’ve been waiting all year for! The water around Hudson was flat and smooth…except for the occasional cruiser… but even they weren’t too bad tonight.
In looking up at the stars and seeing the vastness…I wondered if I would know more of the stars and constellations had I not skipped out of all of them science classes to go fishing…
The Lake St Croix Beach area is a tough place for fishing cats…at least for me. But I went to an area that has something that resemble currant with deep water near by and some shallow water too. Figured 57 feet is deep ‘nuff.
I cast out my little bullies and tried to find some golf instructions on the radio…just wasn’t any tonight.
Seem like the Croix is always a late bite and tonight wasn’t any different. Right around 11:30 my line was acting funny…as I was picking it up I had a good pull and figured this is likely my only chance tonight…so I said WHOA!!!! And set the Gamakatsu hook.
I think there’s a lot of bass in the Croix and these flats are watching them too much! This scrappy little 9 pounder was head shaking and trying to jump in the air…thought it was a big small mouth at first!
Got him to the boat, checked the weight and a picture and off he went to finish his supper. That was it for the night …
Zero Runs …One Hit….and no errors!
As I was putting through the no-wake zone I met a couple guys that were coming out. They stopped and ask how I did…told them “just one 9 pounder”. They said “Really? on the WI side”? I said “yup”. They asked “on crawlers”? I said “nope on bullheads”. They both looked at each other, started their motor and took off….
Those wallnutters are a silly lot!
