My dad and I decided to go out and test our skills for Flatheads and some Channels(just to keep us busy). We headed to our first spot from presscott and arrived at about 8:45 and were fishing in the next few minutes. We had 2 bullhead rods and 2 chicken liver rods set out. At about 9 o’clock my dad had his first run of the night on his chicken liver rod. after several minutes of fighting it he landed this 8lb. 15oz. channel cat(pictured). We quickly weighed the fish and put it back so we did not get a chance to get a length or girth. Then about 9:30 another run on his chicken liver, this one was headed for the fences so when he set the hook there was a lot of tension then his leader broke at the hook. The next run would come on his bullhead rod at about 10:30 this one too was moving quite fast, he got set and got a good hookset then about 2 seconds later his line broke. He had a few more on his chicken liver with them all breaking and finally at 11:15 he landed a Softshell turtle that I figured to be about 20 inches across. From that point on he had 1 run on his bullhead which was dropped after a few seconds. His chicken liver did not get a bite after the turtle. We left at about 1:00am this morning. In my dad’s defense we were trying out 17lb. vanish for a leader, which we discovered to be a little on the weak side.

I did not have a single run all night.

    Redneck Jr…

Your Dad sports a very stylish hat!

Sounds like you guys had a good time…although you might want to dump the leader. Break offs do happen…but not all night! That would be frustrating! Ask Fisher Sherry, she’s had more than her share of late.

    Nice channel in the picture!

You ain’t kidding, Brian! Its VERY frustrating.
I’m not sure which is worse… breaking your line on a couple of fish, or not having a run all night. I’ve had both!

    Nice fish, Chris’s Dad!

Don’t humor the boy. I must be getting old because snuggling up next to Momma sounds better than a night on the river with mosquitos, bugs and barges. I try to get the boy out a time or two a year chasing cats and that’s about it for me anymore. Now chasing walleye is a different story. As far as the line goes the boy has been fiddling all day getting off anything that isn’t strong enough to pull a truck. He has plans to stay out all night for the GTG cat tourney and I think I have a victim(I mean relative) that wants to go with him so I can sleep.

    JR…make sure it’s a fire truck!

I was fishing with a schmuck last night that had a friend of his catch a 30 plus fish…it had two hooks in it…both were his size and brand hook with his broken mono attached… When your line breaks…more often than not you don’t know what you just lost….”Firetruck!”
