The Carbert Curse…Broken!

Over the last 5 years,(correction 20 years) I’ve taken my brother in law out fishing a number of times. The guy gets skunked everytime or if he’s haveing a good day…may get a small sheephead.

Couple examples: Went eye fishing in the fall on the Croix a few years back. He had the honor of netting my 5 lbs eye…He never had a bite. The last two years I took him out catten 3 times. He caught one 3 lbs channel cat. No runs, hits no errors. It seems like when thier’re biteing, I can mention his name and the fish just turn off. BIL’s biggest fish todate was a Canadian Northern tipping the scale at 7 lbs caught when he was a teenager.

This last week the fishing slowed in our area. A number of folk were reporting few runs and when the did get a run it was a smallish flat. I figured that the spawn had started and fishing had slowed…although I hadn’t notice belly’s full of eggs or battle/nesting scares.

I was also concerned that I didn’t make it over to the cotton wood tree to sign in last night. Left my cell phone at home too. I thought being the weather was so nice a number of flatters would be out…but we waved at one eye boat the whole night.

We set up early. I explained that the spawn must have started and that fishing had slowed…As he pointed out…what’s new? That’s the Carbert Curse.

9:15 we have a run. BIL does a great job of reeling in a 13.

    CURSE BROKEN!

We got some pictures (below) got her back into the water and I spent the next 20 minutes retying because the fish got into all four lines!

While I was getting the lines ready…BIL was pretty darn happy that we actually had a fish in the boat. Actually, he was so excited that I couldn’t get a word in edge wise to tell him to pass me another bullhead. He was worse than a woman that just found $500 in front of a shoe store! Love watching a newbie catch their first flat

9:45: A good run! Now my experiance BIL picked up the rod and set the hook like a pro My St Croix custom rod from Hooked on Fishing in Rochester was doubling up pretty good. I said “Mike, this is a much better fish”. By this time I don’t think I had to tell him that. With the butt of the rod into his leg, he was having a hard time bringing her to the boat. When it did come into veiw and gave us the ol’ catfish spray…; well, I can’t repeat the words he used.

40 pounds and some change! After the pictures and a little revival…(brother in law revival that is )) He was talking like a two year old girl…The guy was pretty pumped!

We ended up the night with 5 fish boated and one “I feel him, now I don’t” hook set. 13/40/27/and a couple 5ers tossed in to keep us awake.

It was a great way to end a curse that’s been plagueing him for years. I know what the talk will be on Monday morning at his job!

Poor pictures…but after the weigh in we wanted to get her back to the water. 40 pounds plus ounces on the digital.

This 27 finished the night for the big fish. She gave Mike a tuff time…splashing and fighting all the way to the boat!

    wow!

I can only imagine what it would be like to have 40 # on the end of the line. Back many – many years ago to give ourselves a HS graduation present, myself and a couple of friends skipped out the last week of school and headed to Chamberlin SD to fish paddle fish. During the day paddle fish and at nigt eyes from shore. My friend caught a 20 # one night, what a battle and at the time disappointment in what finaly ended up in the net. About all I remember other than the fight was that with the mouth open we could have inserted both fists in at the same time.

I know paddle fishing has declined over the years, but if given a chance, folks should try it. A 70 – 100 # paddle fish snagged in the tail is also a treat.

Great Job on breaking the curse!

Dark 30 used to have a really bad habit of handing out a curse(others called it a monkey).. once you fished with him, you couldnt catch a flathead to save your life for a given period of time.. heard this rumor from others.. and it happened to me too. When I finally broke the curse it was with a 52″ Flathead. It bottomed out the 50 lb digital scale… I still wonder what that fish weighed.. it was heavy.

As for a recent report to add in… I made it out with Noober and the family last night, including my 12 year old niece. We ended up with 5 flatheads by the end of the night. 2 hit the scale at 15 and change, one other was a little bigger but I forgot to weigh it. I caught another that was under 2 pounds?.. and Carol(niece) caught one that weighed in a little over 5 pounds.

Nothing big, but they were biting. Plenty of wounds on the larger fish. Some 30 lb class fish have been caught in the last week.

Hey Gonefishen, is there a season on Paddles? I’ve never been lucky enough to see alive…but I know they’re in the Croix and sippi.

Dave, I hope you got a picture of your niece!

CA…Glove? Where did that come from?!

Great post Brian. Nothing better than seeing a newbie stammering and studdering after getting there first flatty.
How many cigars did he swallow holding them fish up

Ya, he tried offering me them gloves too, but I said no way Jose. If I am going to catch flatheads like a pro, then the gloves stay off.
Besides, I am sure the only reason Mr. Carbert used the gloves was to keep his cigar dry – can’t imagine what it would taste like coated in cat slime

    No, no…I play a pretty mean fiddle…

Nice paddle, JC. Who’s in the picture and what’s the gps numbers…I won’t tell anyone….

My favorite wife has Monday off and I thought I would treat her to a night looking for getto cat’s in St Paul with FisherDave the Urban Expert and his family. Met up with C Hansen from FishingMN fame and Steve (don’t know your handle Steve).

There was a good breeze to keep it comfortable and not quite cold enough for Deb to get her electric blanket out..

Non of us heard the clicker at all tonight. Deb got a call from her bed at 11:30…The bed was lonely, so we packed up and went home.

Nice to meet all you guys…and I hope I took the jinx along with me

PS Chris…I’m jealous, You’re FMN decals are bigger than my IDA decals…I’m going to see if James will cover the cost of motorhome with IDA painted on the side!

    Hey Brian-

Thought I’d drop in and say Hi! It was fun fishing with you, your wife, Dave, his wife & kid. I didn’t know you could get that many ladies in one spot fishing flatties.

Not a single run all night! Guess thats why its called fishing? The anticipation was exciting though!

I’m gonna try it again in a few days, I have to let the sunburn get better though. Man, was it a hurtin’ today.

    Take care.

Hey Chris? What is that in your avitar!? Bait!!!!!

It was good meeting you also. Last night was the first night down there that someone didn’t have a run. I hate that when it’s a person’s first night (at that location) and nothing happens. Dave and Ralph placed me on the “hot” spot my first night and landed three fish…

We might have to hook up with Mr. D.S. this winter and you guys can show me the secrets of the elusive channels up north.

Dave, I was hoping Jan and Feb…for drilling holes…

Pictured is Mile High from last year working his rod for a channel …or maybe the shaking was because he was cold…I don’t recall.

    Ice Fishing … Bass Fishing

I get about the same amount of exitement when I hear each phrase.. at least the ice is a reason to get the 4 wheeler out… although.. chasing a bass through the lilypads in the heat of the summer on the 4 wheeler sounds better.. but slightly illegal… but, at least they would be good for something.. UNTIL we are allowed to use them for BAIT.

    Dave, Dave, Dave…

By the way, are sheephead under 7 inches legal bait? has anyone used them? I was hoping to find a use for them so I wouldn’t get so angry when I catch them. I suppose no flathead with self respect would touch them either, so maybe channel cats might like them?

Before someone offers a smart-alec response, no I wasn’t fishing for flatheads when I caught the sheephead.

sheephead can be used for bait.. I dont know if there is any length restriction, but I know they are legal bait. The only rough fish I know of you cant use for bait is carp.. whole, or in pieces.

By the way.. I could catch a heck of a flattie on that fish in your avatar.

One subtle note on bait…if your from MN…you can’t use any rough fish from St Anthony falls South on the sippi or from the St Croix because of the zebra mussle infestation.

I think it was Dirk that had a differant slant on the way that law is written….Not that I would advocate breaking the law…but, I would doubt a CO would bother checking the bait on your hook…
