The bet was No fish…Brian wears a pink dress to be photoed in…Muskie Girl gets a fish larger than 20 lbs, her handle changes to Catfish Girl….

    Who won?

The rest of the story a little later…

Ps those are bandaides….. and I’m not going to the Mall of America anytime soon

I wonder if the bandages aren’t because Briank lost the bet and tried to harm himself. Come on Bud, be a good loser. This gal lives to fish.

    Thanks, Bill

ps. Instead of catfishgal I think her name should be: ”Luv2fishgal.”

Maybe the bandaids are from Brian making an attempt to shave his legs in preparation of a photo?

With the weather being so nice, it was a great evening to be on the river. Around 10,000 other people felt the same way, being this was the first real nice weekend. The Prescott landing was packed full and with the high water, the landing is about ready to lose a few parking spaces.

I met up with Muskie Girl at the landing. After a few moments of yapping and checking her gear on board, we launched and got out of the mess of boats and cars at the landing. I say I “checked” her gear because I was sniffing for a smuggled package of Lutefisk. I thought I had discovered a smuggled package, but soon realize it was only the dumpster at the launch.

Once to our fishing area, I gave Cheri a brief tour. One of the areas we went by was the infamous cotton wood tree. Cheri was a little disappointed in the size of the tree. “Muskie Girl Was Here 6/2005” wouldn’t fit on the tree.

We moved into our first spot and set up. I have to admit, I was very nervous about having someone drive four and a half hours to catch a flatty. The pressure was on not only to ensure she got into a good fish, but I really didn’t want to have my picture taken in a pink dress. The rules of the friendly (tongue in cheek) bet was:
If we were skunked, I would have to wear a pink dress and be photographed. I know Cheri had a camera along and I’m going to bet that she had a pink low cut spandex jumper in her gear somewhere!
If we caught a flat over 20 lbs, she would change her handle to Catgirl/Catfish Girl.

We were on our first spot fairly early. I went through the how to’s, why’s and what to do’s with her while fishing this new snag. After losing a number of hooks, sinkers and bullhead to snags. It was getting close to the golden hours. We moved into position for the duration of the evening (at least I hoped I wouldn’t have to move).

Lately the bites have been coming as early as 9:30 or as late as 10. At 9:45 we had nothing. As I looked up from my watch…just to say it’s time….rod #3 was “popped” and started playing my favorite tune. Cheri did a great job of grabbing the rod, locking the reel in and setting the hook. On hook set, you could see the cat said “OUCH” and the rod tip headed for the water. Cheri was using a Garcia 6500. This was to be her first fish on her brand spanking new rod…and a dandy cat it was. I was sure it would be a twenty something if it was landed. Since Cheri was an experienced carp fisherperson, she handled her rod well. Shortly the mudcat was boat side and congrates were in order. In placing the cat on the digital…it stopped at 19.7 lbs…much to my chagrin, just short of Cheri’s handle change goal! A couple pictures and off she went.

About 15 minutes we had the little one for the night boat side. A cute little 5 pounder. Cheri wouldn’t allow me to combine the weights for a total of over 20…and the handle change…so the pressure was still on.

45 minutes went by, and then the #3 rod took off again. Once Cheri made the hook set and I could see the weight of the fish on the rod….I was a happy man. You could tell it was at least in the mid twenties although I was optimistic the it could hit 30 pounds. I love it when a cat has it’s way with an angler! Almost to the boat I congradulated the struggling Muskie Girl and her handle changing catch…. Just as I did…I hear words come out of her mouth not fit for human consumption. YUP! lost her, the hook came out… Back to pressure again.
Not too long after…but it felt like a very long time as I was drowning myself in self pity…the #2 rod indicated a fish. I was hopeful this time. Although it was a good fish and Cheri had her hands full moving uncooperative flat around the motor and way from the second anchor, I couldn’t tell if it was going to be MY fish. Once in the boat we both commented on how plump she was for her length. Placing her one the digital she came in at….

20.2 lbs…. A WINNER! Weight confirmed by CATFISH GIRL…. I love that cat!

We pulled the plug at 1:30 and headed back. Three fish in the boat (all released) and a memory of the BIGGUN that got away.

Thanks for the enjoyable night Cheri! I’m glad we got into a few fish. I’m looking forward to fishing the IDA Catfish Contest with you as my partner in July!

After missing the safety guard and getting a couple cuts on her fingers…Cheri held her 20.2 personal best cat by his hands.

But still….NO GLOVES! A true catfisherperson.

Thanks everyone. I had a blast . The night was awesome, the cats cooperated , and the conversation was entertaining. I have to say I’m hooked ( ). Can’t wait for the next time. I am kind of disappointed that I couldn’t get that pic of the pink dress on Briank, but some how I find the pink dress myth could be true. Seems Briank keeps a tube of Vasaline on board – says it’s because the river water makes his hands dry, .

Look Ma – NO GLOVES Thou after getting a couple battle wounds – I could see the use for gloves, but come on who needs them.

Umm…normaly I only need the vasoline when CA comes along….

CFG just wanted to let you know that this morning about 11, I went out to the truck to bring in your homemade cookies….but bag and all was gone…
No one was home so I did a little searching…found the bag with a few crumbs in it in the garbage…

Is nothing safe anymore? Do I have to lock up my cookies? Life is just not fair!

You don’t have to use the same excuse you gave Deb, just tell the truth – you ate them all before going into the house this morning and didn’t want to share. Shame on you

Don’t worry everyone, I’ll get that picture of Briank in that pink dress if it’s the last thing I do. (hey I know, I’ll just spike the cookies next time)

MG, you had to feed him too! The guy is a real lush. I haven’t fished with him since he turned to the dark side so my venison is safe for a while. I’m nighty-nite while you guys are chasing kitties so my food is probably safe until hard water again. Would have liked to see that pink dress though.

Congrats on the nice fish, Catfishgirl. It looks like you had a great trip. The name has a nice ring to it, “Catfishgirl”. Sounds much better than that other one, Musksomething or other. I suppose now you will start stocking a bullhead tank in your garage and spooling all your reels with 80# PowerPro. BrianK is getting to be the Jedi Knight of the Catfishing forum. Brian – It is time to change your name to “Yoda”. You been doing the Jedi mind tricks on the flats lately. Good job on bringing Catfishgirl onto the team. I was not looking forward to seeing your tush in a pink dress – that picture in the shower was bad enough.

Was way ahead of that. I have been using 80lb Power Pro for years now on everything but my ultra lites. Because you just never know what your going to get when your out fishing.

Yup…fishing with me is a handle changing experiance….no intesive care cream needed….

Personally…I think it was a great night even if we wouldn’t have landed a fish…although… you all would be suffering!

Cheri was set up for catfishing. Don’t recall the rods she brought along, but one lite up and both were med heavy actions. She had 6500’s and both filled with 80 # Power Pro. If I recall, most of the fish were landed on her equipment.

I think it’s time that I turn into a non betting man…the catfish lords can’t be with me forever…

The rods that I used were Berkley Glowstick (glows in the dark and has LED lights in the blanks) and Quantum Trophy (my carp rod). Reels were Abu’s 6500 one a C4 and one a C3. 80lb Power Pro all the way (I can’t say enough about using Power Pro).

How do you like your glowsticks catfish girl? I have been considering picking a couple up for them times when you cant see squat… like in Brians boat in the middle of nowhere a night or 2 before you fished with him… for some reason the 7′ backup BLACK rod just didnt stand out… even with a head lamp.

Cookies, bandaids, vaseline, no lutey, and some nice kittys, sounds like a true BrianK adventure. Glad to hear you are both none the worse for the trip.

I loved the Glowstick. It seemed to handle very well and the LED light seems to help with reglowing.

Congrats on the name change CFG! I am sliding over into the dark side myself. I can actually get away for a few hours at night and fish. So why not catfish? Walleyes, however, will always be my true love….. Oh yea, my wife too!
