With the weather being so nice, it was a great evening to be on the river. Around 10,000 other people felt the same way, being this was the first real nice weekend. The Prescott landing was packed full and with the high water, the landing is about ready to lose a few parking spaces.
I met up with Muskie Girl at the landing. After a few moments of yapping and checking her gear on board, we launched and got out of the mess of boats and cars at the landing. I say I “checked” her gear because I was sniffing for a smuggled package of Lutefisk. I thought I had discovered a smuggled package, but soon realize it was only the dumpster at the launch.
Once to our fishing area, I gave Cheri a brief tour. One of the areas we went by was the infamous cotton wood tree. Cheri was a little disappointed in the size of the tree. “Muskie Girl Was Here 6/2005” wouldn’t fit on the tree.
We moved into our first spot and set up. I have to admit, I was very nervous about having someone drive four and a half hours to catch a flatty. The pressure was on not only to ensure she got into a good fish, but I really didn’t want to have my picture taken in a pink dress. The rules of the friendly (tongue in cheek) bet was:
If we were skunked, I would have to wear a pink dress and be photographed. I know Cheri had a camera along and I’m going to bet that she had a pink low cut spandex jumper in her gear somewhere!
If we caught a flat over 20 lbs, she would change her handle to Catgirl/Catfish Girl.
We were on our first spot fairly early. I went through the how to’s, why’s and what to do’s with her while fishing this new snag. After losing a number of hooks, sinkers and bullhead to snags. It was getting close to the golden hours. We moved into position for the duration of the evening (at least I hoped I wouldn’t have to move).
Lately the bites have been coming as early as 9:30 or as late as 10. At 9:45 we had nothing. As I looked up from my watch…just to say it’s time….rod #3 was “popped” and started playing my favorite tune. Cheri did a great job of grabbing the rod, locking the reel in and setting the hook. On hook set, you could see the cat said “OUCH” and the rod tip headed for the water. Cheri was using a Garcia 6500. This was to be her first fish on her brand spanking new rod…and a dandy cat it was. I was sure it would be a twenty something if it was landed. Since Cheri was an experienced carp fisherperson, she handled her rod well. Shortly the mudcat was boat side and congrates were in order. In placing the cat on the digital…it stopped at 19.7 lbs…much to my chagrin, just short of Cheri’s handle change goal! A couple pictures and off she went.
About 15 minutes we had the little one for the night boat side. A cute little 5 pounder. Cheri wouldn’t allow me to combine the weights for a total of over 20…and the handle change…so the pressure was still on.
45 minutes went by, and then the #3 rod took off again. Once Cheri made the hook set and I could see the weight of the fish on the rod….I was a happy man. You could tell it was at least in the mid twenties although I was optimistic the it could hit 30 pounds. I love it when a cat has it’s way with an angler! Almost to the boat I congradulated the struggling Muskie Girl and her handle changing catch…. Just as I did…I hear words come out of her mouth not fit for human consumption. YUP! lost her, the hook came out… Back to pressure again.
Not too long after…but it felt like a very long time as I was drowning myself in self pity…the #2 rod indicated a fish. I was hopeful this time. Although it was a good fish and Cheri had her hands full moving uncooperative flat around the motor and way from the second anchor, I couldn’t tell if it was going to be MY fish. Once in the boat we both commented on how plump she was for her length. Placing her one the digital she came in at….
20.2 lbs…. A WINNER! Weight confirmed by CATFISH GIRL…. I love that cat!
We pulled the plug at 1:30 and headed back. Three fish in the boat (all released) and a memory of the BIGGUN that got away.
Thanks for the enjoyable night Cheri! I’m glad we got into a few fish. I’m looking forward to fishing the IDA Catfish Contest with you as my partner in July!
