I am looking to catch some cats tonight. I have some left over suckers from pike fishing and was wondering about a good place to fish. I have fished upstream from Watergate Marina (the backwater area), Hidden Falls and the rip rap near at an old unused boat ramp by the U of M Fairview hospital (east bank). Any suggestions?

    Hey Mplspug!
Look at the “urban catt’n” thread in this forum. If you can recognize where those fellows were fishing that’s where you want to go. Or you can always do the PM route and see if somebody will take you. NOT ME! Those guys would have to take me with too and teach me how. Anyway, good luck!

msplug .. send me an email.. we can see if we can work something out.. I’m not over-protective of spots.. but I try to avoid turning too many people onto too many places.. eventually its hard to get a spot to fish myself without rubbing shoulders after word of mouth travels.. or worse yet, word travels to the wrong people and they start harvesting everything they catch.. big flatheads take some time to grow.

my email is [email protected] .. or give me a call on the cell .. 612-281-0943

DD.. any evening you can sneak out for a few hours.. give me a call, or trade some emails. 9-11 pm is usually about the middle of prime time.. you could get a fish or 2 and be home by 11:30 pm… then again .. that sometimes translates to 2:30 a.m. in catfish lingo when the runs stay consistant an you lose track of time… my contact info is above.

Thanks Dave! The oldest kid (Jonny) gets out of his cast Thursday (He had corrective hip surgery May 4th) and then we are gone for the weekend. I would have made it out with you guys by now except I have to get Jonny to bed at night and then flip him at least once during the night. Not conducive to going out after dark.

Bob and I should try and get together with you next week. Hopefully the Flats won’t have shut down by then. I’ll give you a call on your cell sir!

Do it again in a heart beat…

    Hey Brian!

I’ve done the be home early and then show up hours later thing too much. It makes for a chilly home-life.

My daughter Alissa is watching me post and she is very interested in dancing bananas. So now we are going to add silly stuff to the post….. Ok she got that out of her system and now we will look at the post. Later sir!

I tell my wife I’ll be home right at dark30 ….I’m never late. What I should stop doing is saying “If I never see you again, I love you”

The water is very high now. Anyone who has been afraid to run this section in the past, can travel without worries for a while. I was out last night for a few hours. Caught a few cats under 3 lbs. which has been par for me on this stretch. Anchors were pretty useless in the fast current but I made do tying off to tree limbs.

Ok, after heavy research, a scouting mission and a little too much obsessive thinking, I think I have found a spot. I don’t know if it is the same as the Urban Cats post, but I have a sneaky suspicion it is. I scouted this spot today and caught a day time channel cat. I am going to give it a try tonight for an hour or two. I have to figure out a rig to land any potential big fish.

I’ll let you know how I did. Hopefully I can pull in a decent cat. I am hoping the weather turns them on a little, although don’t cats bite better after a rain?

3 Misses, that was it. I think they were small channel cats trying to eat fillet O sucker. I was using a bobber too, because I don’t know how snaggy it is there, although I think it’s not too bad. I see a post where you were out last night too? I guess I didn’t scout as well as I thought I did. I bet you were a few blocks north of where I was. That channel I caught during the day must have clouded my vision. I guess I should give up my PI license now

Now that I know I was wrong and had a poor night, what do you think the chances of me going out again tonight. I won’t be happy until I land a decent fish.

Here’s a gross plea for help. I tried fermenting some chicken livers, but the flies have found their way in. Yes, there are cute little maggots wriggling around in the bag now that is sitting in my backyeard. Can I salvage this in anyway, perhaps freezing them in the basement refrigerater that serves as my bait store(r)?

freezing rotten chicken livers? I have never used chicken liver let alone maggot crawling ones lol. I have always had the best luck using “fresh” cut bait, mainly sucks or goldeye and tried shad with success thanks mile high for the shad. If you are going to be freezing your cutbait before use, dont cut it up before you freeze it, a wise ol man in fargo told me never to do this, always freeze them whole then cut them as needed. He claims he has seen a definate improvement in his bite rate after doing this.

    Hope this helps

I was just kidding about the chicken liver, but I wanted to see who would call me on it.

The freshed the bait the better right. I have these suckers that I froze and then used yesterday evening. I refroze the remaining and I will probably use this batch one last time before tossing them. I have been using the whole sucker, because the ones I got were the 2nd largest ones you can get at Joe’s, but I don’t think big enough to be cut smaller. I put it on whole and make a cut in the tail to get more scent from the inner flesh. I then poke a few holes through the belly allowing the scent to flow out, but keep those tasty insides for when a fish bites down on it.

I’ve had good luck with stepping on smaller suckers and larger shiners for channels…maggots are for bluegills!
