Urban Catt’en – the untapped fishery

Last night was a new experience for me.

I had the pleasure of fishing with two flatheaders on P1 on the old Mississippi, Dave S and Ralph B. Both of these fellows are stand up catters, with a passion for flats and a fantastic working knowledge of “inner” city cat fishing…Maybe I should say they are “river smart”. Dave is one of those rare types of catters, that has more fun putting you on fish and watching you get into a fish than landing one himself…

Once I found out the location we were going to fish, I scratched my head and said “Really?”. I actually worked less than a mile from this downtown area a few years ago…which kinda made me mad…because all the fishing time I could have had….If I only knew then what I know now….as the saying goes.

It just seemed very odd to be standing under street lights with my truck parked 15 feet away fishing for flats. No headlamp, no 2 million candle power light or GPS to guide you back to the launch. I didn’t even have to worry about loosing my anchor in a snag… Just a comfy lawn chair to keep the dogs happy. (wish I would have brought mine along…but my bait cooler made a good stand in)

Sometime around 9:30 Dave left to the Dairy Queen. I was thinking when was the last time I could take time out to run to the Dairy Queen or a Pizza Hut? Just don’t happen from a boat miles from a launch. We had a few inquisitive folks stop by asking what we were fishing for. Once fella spotted the decals on my truck and inquired about how to get a hold of James to “teach him how to catch a walleye on P4”. Glad I had some IDA business cards along…

The night started off slow. Not a run until around 11 pm.

Around 11, the feel of a nice fish felt good in my hands again. First flat of the year…I got that “religious feeling again! The three of us all guessed the weight of my little icebreaker and we agreed on 8 lbs. (first picture), she turned out to be just a hair over 8. This was to be my largest fish of the night. I would end up with 3 for the evening.

Big fish honors went to Ralph. He landed a flat that weighed just over 17 right around midnight. This fish looked like 22…we all were fooled by the size.

All the females caught were heavy in the lower end with eggs. Dave made the comment that it looked like they maybe spawning early this year.

We pulled the plug around 3 and after a bunch of “thank you’s” I headed the 19 miles back home with a new experience and new friendships under my belt.

Dave and Ralph opened my eyes to a great-untapped fishery. Urban Cat Fishing … no boat expense unless you call a $20 lawn chair your boat.

    Thanks again guys!

Man I wish I could’ve had Dairy Queen last night. I forgot to bring along something to drink. I was dying of thirst. The bullhead water was pretty bad. . All I had left were Starburst and Copenhagen!

Those are some great concrete jungle catfish! Good job!

    Hey Brian!
Dave is definetly the urban expert. And Ralph definetly knows what he is doing too (I’ve seen his pics elsewhere). Dave better watch it or he is gonna start getting guide requests.

Brian are you going to be on the Croix saturday morning? Walleye GFA and myself are going to be there or pool 4. Haven’t decided yet. Walleye GFA is also a good catter and fishes with Dave a lot. Small world!

DD..I would be (on the Croix), but I’m running over to the ARM event in Manomin…if i can spell it!

If I’m still up to it after that…I “hope” to try a little night catten/eye fishing on the croix after dark. But that’s up in the air. Too bad, I would have liked to meet you guys.

    Next time.

Hey have fun at the ARM event! Walleye GFA camps at St. Croix Bluffs park at least a few times every summer and we both try and get out on the Croix as often as we can. So we will definetly meet at some point. I got to get out and seriously try to fish cats. I got the equipment just don’t have the time.

The action was a little slower last night.. but still worth the 2 hours on the water. Ralph got a nice channel that broke the 10 lb mark, and I ended up with a flathead of about the same size… An acceptable 2 hours of fishing when you can barely keep your eyes open.

The eggs are getting very developed in some of the flats.. they dont seem to be getting loose yet, but it doesnt seem like it is going to be long for some. The area we were fishing the other night will probably shut down for the flatheads in a couple weeks until the spawn cycle is complete.. other than a few stragglers.

Mid July and on should be the time when the fish turn the feedbag back on.. but I will be fishing them until they turn it off.

DD, Brian.. any aquaintence of yours.. we should get together one of these evenings very soon and see what we can do.

    Dark…you can’t use a .357 on channels in MN…you know that!

Hey Fisher Dave! Welcome to IDA! Glad you registered! Now we have to get your “camera man” on here to post some of those urban brutes

By the way…I’ll post some pictures on another thread…but bullheads took it 3 out of 4 tonight. The 4th was a channel on cut sucker.

    Hey Dave!
I feel like I know Brian. But no, we haven’t met yet. I haven’t actually met Ralph yet either. All sorts of people I consider friends on this site I’ve never met. Hope to eventually meet them all!

It seems that fisherman, don’t have to actually meet…to be friends…
