Last night was a beautiful evening for fishing on the St Croix. It was a great night all around, Twins win in the 11th inning and I catch my first Flathead of the season. Overall fishing was pretty slow, one 24″ channel about 4:30pm and a small 4.5#, 22″ flathead at 11:00pm on a bullhead. Picked up a couple of sheephead in between on cut bait and that was it. Fished until midnight and it was a beautiful evening, almost a full moon on a calm night. The forecast almost kept me home, I’m glad I went out. The river is pretty high with the level at 679.7′ and it appears to have finally crested (hope this rain finally stops now). The islands are all flooded again and lots of wood, weeds, and debris in the water. Good current flow through the backwaters and the water temp was 62 degrees. Mosquitos were on a tear in the backwater areas so were those darn beavers again. They keep thumping the water around the boat trying to run me off. About midnight I gave in and went home. Here is a pic of the little flathead, he just hammered a bullhead like he was starving to death and was a feisty little critter. I’m after his big old Mama – I bet she goes 50# plus.
