Ignore that last post. I read the whole article. I see the star trib also has a world record fish listed, the red horse sucker.

The amazing thing is it seems a new record is caught every year or two! What an awesome fish!

Not just cats, but walleyes are getting bigger too! I think catch and release, and improvements on and around the rivers are helping too! Plus all the great information you get on sites like this one!

Not as big as you think, notice how he is holding that fish closer to the camera with his arms straight out……

Wow! Now I pretty much HAVE to start fishing. Here’s my (reach) thinking now – Mississippi River near the northern reach of the species range (within a couple hundred miles anyway) and it produces the WORLD record. Makes the idea of a truly legendary WI or MN flat seem not so far fetched, eh?

Now…I’ve heard this fish died while being transported, definitely too bad. I believe they are going to do some genetic testing now.

I have gone into mourning for that fish. Matt, I agree with you because I have seen the legendary fish once on pool 9. Trouble was she saw me and my rig and headed in the opposite direction. The tail that it showed me was as big as two hands fingers spread out thumbs touching. Afterwards, I sat there shaking, alone wishing I had been able to drag someone with me to drive the boat and pull the anchors. This big old flathead hit a winter killed salted shad of all things.

I saw the report up at Winnie….while fishing for 17 inch or less fish

The picture they had on the news made her look like she was dead then. Kinda like she had her picture taken too many times…just speculation on my part…. too bad she died though.

Just a thought, do cat’s mate with another cat of the same size??????

Fish in general, but especially freakish oversized fish, aren’t exactly designed to support their own weight out of the water. In the water, their density gives them near neutral bouyancy, but out of it their own weight probably causes quite a bit of damage. Same reason that 20 pound lobster probably died, and the same reason our own brains are housed in a liquid filled cranium.

It would have been pretty amazing had the fish lived, taking this into consideration. I know other fish this big have lived (the Texacoma fish) and that’s actually the more remarkable story.

I’m more excited by the fish’s existence in the first place than saddened by its death – and happy that people got a chance to see it at all. Now let’s see a flathead that size!
