I missed an offer from Putz to chase eyes on the Croix this morning…although he may have left with out me on purpose….
So I thought I would head out looking for a cat or two. Sounded like the rain wasn’t going to come in until 1 or 2 am. which would be perfect for fishing channels early and getting a bullhead under a flats nose.
Set up with a circle hook on one rod using sucker and a octopus 10/0 with cut bullhead on the other. Sat down, and turned on 1500 to listen to Joe for a while. Half an hour later no nibble and time to move. Found a spot that had a good currant “channel” and I fished the seams on both sides. It was then I realized that it’s not a good thing to be swatting at skeeters when you have either a hook or a knife in your hand. Man, they were thick out there today!
The circle hooked rod bent over and I was into a good cat. She came in at 7.10 on the digital. Catten Addict would have been proud….I took a couple pictures gave her a smack on the cheek and off she went. Then I spit out all the larva that was on her skin for the next 5 minutes or so…yuck! Don’t know how you do that CA! And…does your wife know?
I noticed I wasn’t getting bit on my cut bullhead rod and by this time i was out of suckers. I got rid of the bullhead and put as many slice fathead’s on the hook as I could. Tossed ‘er back out and within 10 minutes had my last fish up to the boat.
Has anyone had any luck with cut bullheads? It’s too early to tell but there seemed to be a preferance to sucker or fatheats over them…
Anyway, ended up with 4 in the boat for the two hours I fished…first one was the largest at 7 lbs. But it felt good to feel the rolling and fight of a good fish again.
As I said I was planning on sticking around until dark, but the radio kept reporting the rain getting close…so I made the wife happy and came home early.
She even started cooking chicken wings on the grill for me!
