Mile 832 (Tim), Catten Addict (Sean) and myself thought we would head down to P 4 on Friday. With the wind gusting to 45, rain sprinkles and temps in the low 50’s…what better day to go catten! We met a few walleye guys coming off the river as we went out. They were saying something about too windy…
I’m going to say this up front, I was shut out. Tim schooled both of us on the number of fish and Sean ended up with the largest of the day…. However….in my defense
While Tim was finding the second anchor, he wasn’t watching the rope on the first anchor that wasn’t holding…I had to watch these guys pretty darn close…and it paid off. I hollered to Tim to grab the fist anchor line…just inches before the line was going over the side. Tim’s a good study and caught it on the first grab. It was close…but due to my very observant nature…was able to save the anchor.
The channel cats weren’t what I would call “on a feeding spree” but with all the peckers, it kept me busy and there were a lot of small fish chewing on our cut bait to keep Tim and Sean alert. (think about it ) Cut shad seemed to have the best results. All of our fish and most bites came from the main channel of a tributary.
While Tim and CA were discussing the best gloves to buy at Fleet Farm, :I noticed that Tim’s front rod started rising out of the boat…again another close call as Tim grabbed the rod just in time to keep it from going over the side of the boat. Again…because of my ever watchful presents another eater size channel was boated.
I have never worked so hard while fishing in my life. Keeping a constant eye on these two and their equipment and trying to take good pictures was very challenging. This of course, is what led to my shut out.
I was a little worried about Tim being it was his first time out with Catten Addict and myself. Some of our off color bantering could make one feel….”uncomfortable”. I felt much better when Sean and I were talking about the cold and 90% of a body’s heat lose is through the head and neck…Tim interrupted and said “Except for Briank, most of his heat loss is through his mouth”. At that point I knew old Tim felt at home….
So..all in all we had a great time/trip. Good laughs, good fish…heck even Bowfinhunter (aka IwishIwasalong) called to see how we were doing.
Until next time…may your bait stink to high heaven!
