I really wish this was a big deal but it got my blood going! I ventured out this morning to play with whatever would bite a leech and lo and behold, a small flathead, not 30 seconds into the effort got a hold of my jig/leech and gave a nice tug for a couple minutes. For being less than 5 pounds, it sure fought like a heavy fish! Anyway, just had to share some enthusiasm!

BTW, does anyone have an open seat for the FTR/GTG cat competition? I don’t have a boat but I’m going to be down there Friday anyway……………figured it’ll be my only shot at getting to fish if I jumped into the cat competition. Anyone????

WOW! 2 days in a row! Not another flathead but I got a pair of channels today! SWEET! Neither one would stop floppin’ the whole time they were both in and out of the water! Scrappy little critters aren’t they?! I’m seeing myself getting more serious about catfishing REAL SOON!

They are lots of fun arent they? They really get your attention when a 10+lber hits a crank being pulled at 3mph. My biggest on a crank is a 30lb flathead last summer….my arm still hurts!

30lbs.?!?!?!?! WOW! That’ll put a bend in the rod for sure! I was using a St. Croix Avid 6’3″, which is rated as medium power but in a 6-10lb. line class. I did have the power down the shaft but there sure was a lot of bend in the rod fighting it up to the top! I use that same rod for walleye fishing so I can only imagine what a 30lb.er would feel like! …………………..no wonder your arm still hurts!!!

It wasnt on a shad rap, but last year during high water I caught a flathead over 30 on a jig on 6lb test mono and a medium light 6′ St Croix. You have seen how low my boat sits in the water, I dont think the rod tip left the water until the end of the fight.

Dirk, there’s an email and a private (redundant message) for you in case you haven’t looked yet.

Dave! I can certainly imagine the tussle you had on your hands! What an awesome experience to be able to share! How high did you pulse get???
