I just went out to Joe’s and picked up a spool of 80lb power pro. I got halfway through spooling it, and there was a spot in the line that looked pretty messed up, it was much thicker and was frayed at the same time. I just cut that part out and spliced it so I guess it wasn’t a big deal. Has anyone here ever seen that problem in power pro line? I’ve used mono for years and have never seen a flaw. Maybe it’s just bad luck?

Power Pro line

Last year I had Power Pro spooled on most of my reels. Never had any flawed line. I would have returned it. At what it cost you should get a perfect spool.

February 28, 2005 at 1:50 am #345928I agree on taking it back…or at least sending it the the company. The only “splice” that should be in your State Record Flathead line is where it connects to the backing….
Although that might make a good commercal…”so strong it landed a 125 lb fish with a splice in the line”.
I’ve only used 6 150 yard spools…never see that…
PS see pm…
February 28, 2005 at 2:39 am #345939I’ve never seen this in PowerPro line, although I suppose like anything else, there’s going to be a couple that come off the production line that will have a flaw. I would’ve just returned it…I’m sure they would’ve given you another box for free.
I still think PowerPro is the best line out there!
February 28, 2005 at 3:00 am #345947Was it the Hi-Vis stuff or the normal brownish greyish stuff? With the Hi-vis I’ve seen wax stuff build up in spots so its not perfectly smooth but if it was frayed I’d give the company a call and see if they will give you another spool.
February 28, 2005 at 3:05 am #345952I’ve never seen that either but you never know I guess…I’d like to see the actual manufacturing process.
February 28, 2005 at 5:50 pm #346084Well, I took you guy’s advice and returned the flawed line I bought for $20.00 back to Joe’s sporting goods. I also found out Fleet Farm in Oakdale has 80lb power pro for only $16.00, so I asked the manager at Joe’s if they would match the price at Fleet Farm. He said they would, but they would first have to call fleet farm to verify the price. Well, a few minutes later the manager comes back to me and says Fleet Farm has the line for 16 bucks but they don’t carry the Hi -Vis yellow, they only have green so he can’t match the price ( even though both colors are the same price) and Joes had the same green line for $20.00, the same price as the yellow line I bought. I thought it was bad business on their part since they already sold me a bad spool of line and I had to waste gas to drive up there and take it back. I don’t think Joe’s will need to worry about me returning anything anymore.
February 28, 2005 at 5:59 pm #346085Glad to hear you returned it. It shouldn’t matter what color for sale price. It pays to check around before you purchase anything. I hate that feeling of paying more for something than I had to.

February 28, 2005 at 7:26 pm #346099Tim…I’ve kicked myself many times by going out and making a purchace only to talk about it later…and find out that someone on IDA knows where to get it for less.
Normally a half day and there’s an answer…
But to your point. That was a little goofy. Did you tell him there is more than one Fleet Farm around?
February 28, 2005 at 10:18 pm #346137I told the manager ” It’s the same line, just a different color.” And it was on sale at Fleet Farm in Oakdale. That was the store he called on the phone that carried green but no hi vis yellow. I didn’t really think about the other 10 Fleet Farms that probably did have the line. Maybe I’m over reacting, but it seems like the bigger a business gets, the less they care about making their customers happy. From personal experience at least. On the contrary, Catfish Connection has been excellent, I am very pleased with them. They ship within 4 or 5 days tops. Paying shipping is usually worth it when you consider how many stores in MN actually carry real catfish type tackle. It saves you from calling around asking for 10/0 hooks and getting the ” sure we carry those!” then driving all the way up there to find out the guy on the phone can’t tell 10/0 from a #10!
March 1, 2005 at 12:23 am #346172Hi Vis Yellow? I must not get out much!
A store is never big enough to loose customers because of things like that. The little guys really get hurt now days trying to compete with the giants (and) the internet. The bait store in Belle Plaine is closing up cause they can’t match prices…Too bad, it was a nice place to meet and tell lies!
I only have one complaint with CC. I buy a lot of plastics and I can’t go by the descriptions…I need to see color. The catalogue has no color charts and online you need to click on each and every item to view it…not a really big deal I guess.
March 1, 2005 at 4:14 am #346242Sportsmans Wharehouse in Coon Rapids ! Five 10/0 Gamaz for under $2. I think it was $1.79…almost 50 cents less than Catfish Connection…
See? It’s been about a half day…:)
But I don’t know if they would stand behind a faulty hook or a lower price…
March 1, 2005 at 6:37 am #346260You know I was at Sportsmans warehouse about 2 weeks ago, but my mind was on rods instead of hooks, Damn! I think I’m just a bad shopper. I have much more patience when I’m fishing. I guess I need some more practice bargain hunting. Although I think I could spot a faulty hook in one of those clear packages! So I got that going for me……. which is nice.
March 1, 2005 at 11:47 am #346267Dark,
Give them guys a CC a call and tell them because you can’t see the color on line or in the catalog to send you on of each….of everything (plastic’s I mean) at no charge. No, I’m not kidding!
You need a referance and they should have a way to supply that.
They’ve been pretty easy to work with for me…Dark, you are single handedly going to give catfish a bad name by using plastics and figuring out how to catch them on plastics!
And once you do…we all might as well be fishing for…BASS!
PS Tim, I spooled up all my rods with high vis last year. I’m not convince yet that this is the way to go with ALL your rods…at this time. The biggest disadvantage is when you have a tangle…4 hi vis lines look all the same…much easier to untangle with differant color line.
Jury’s still out on the benefits of useing hi vis at night…
March 1, 2005 at 5:09 pm #346329Right now I spooled power pro on only one reel. I have been pretty weary about super lines in the past, so I’m starting out with just one. Most of you guys seem to really like it so I think I probably will too. My other reels have 50lb Ande Mono on them. The stuff is like Weed Whacker line, but I’ve never lost a fish with it. I can’t say that about Berkely Whiplash 80lb and Stren Superbraid 65lb. Ive had both break shorty after the hookset when the fish pulled hard. Could be bad luck? Or maybe GIANT FISH , or maybe I should stop swinging for the fence when I set the hook.
March 2, 2005 at 12:13 am #346406If the yellow stuff is made out the same thing as the dk green, you got nothing to worry about. I was strictly a mono type guy for a long time and then I ran into Dan Gapen at a show. I told him I wanted a top notch catfish rig. Naturally he sold me one of his rods (works for me) He then added a Shimano Corsair and spooled it with Greenspot Dacron line..I think it was 50#. Later I tried the Power Pro and never looked back. I still prefer mono for lighter duty action…even for (non Red River) channel cats.
Gotta catch a few Bass for bait Brian!
Its a real blast when your pitchin a 3″ grub on a 1/8 oz head for walleyes and a Flathead anywhere from 5 to over 30 lbs decides he’s hungry!! Kinda puts the ol 6# XL to the test!

pittmdPosts: 181March 4, 2005 at 2:37 pm #347042I can understand your fustration with the return policy. I work at Gander Mountain part time in the fishing dept. and if you could see some of the scams people try to pull on the store you would know why they insist on the competitor having the exact same product in stock.
