Like I said, I was a few hundred miles south this weekend…really wanted to catch my first blue cat, plus maybe a monster flat or two! My friend Tim and I fished two separate dams, the first one was purely navigational and was raging pretty good for this time of year…to our chagrin. The second one was a hydro…this one was flowing pretty good, but was manageable with a lucky anchor hold, and 10-15 oz. of lead. We caught a mix of blues, channels, and Flats. We were fishing current seams, ledge edges, concrete walls, and visible cover. baits ranged from bluegills and white bass…to cut mooneye. We caught about 50 percent during the day and 50 percent at night. I guess you could say we covered about everything. I had a ton of fun and learned a lot of new approaches…but I can’t help thinking “I wish I was in Matt’s boat this weekend:) Here’s my biggest blue:

    Great picts JC!

I don’t think Matt’s boat is big enough for all the people that wish they were with him.

Couple questions please. It looks too clean to be the Mississippi, what river where you on?

Also, with the Blues, do they have the nasty habit of chomping on your hand when you put it in their mouth…like a big channel?

Last question, do they go for the cutbait or live?

Looks like you had a great time! They look like they could be some beefy fighters!

We were on the Mississippi…the big river varies in turbidity quite a bit on it’s journey down south, and it is less turbid where we were at. Blues will bite down like a channel…Tim got chomped by his big fish, they don’t seem to have the bone crushing strength of a channel though. Cutbait is usually your best bet for blues, however the biggest fish we caught were all on bluegills??? Blues are in third place as far as the fight goes…but they have some stiff competition.

    Jason.

~H20~? Is that your opinion too?

    1. Walleye
    2. Sauger
    3. Blue Cats?

Sounds like fun. Looks like a little different fishing than we’re used to up here. I had a solid channel cat bite going over the weekend up here. Not quite the size you and Flathead WI are on . The kids had all they could handle though!!

That looks like a dam I was at about 3 weeks ago. You weren’t at Keokuk were you? I fished there during the big classic but didn’t do any good. You are right about the fight. From were I’m from we catch blues as much as we do flatheads and the flats definitly fight better. Sounds like you had a good time though.
