For years the Wisconsin River has made you wonder everytime you had a fish holding you down and giving you a headshake whether it was a catfish. I’m glad to say this summer the Mississippi is also bringing up that question a lot. Those that are concentrating on catfish are getting what they want on most days.

Being a Walleye specialist that catches his share of bass, and makes most of his living guiding, you might think I would consider them a pain. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Customers love their fight, their attitude, and sometimes even their taste. About 90% of our cats go back,(maybe not necessary but a habit),and as I get more and more requests for catfish trips I imagine I will start taking them. Almost all our cats are coming on 1/2 nightcrawlers.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of watching a young boy and either Dad or Grandpa land a high teens or low 20s cat off their dock on the Black river,(unfortunately my camera was in the truck). It took ten or fifteen minutes and the young man finally yeilded the rod and took up netting duties under the fight of the fish. I was really quite excited and didn’t pay attention to species but it looked like a mudcat.

    It is amazing Lawrence!

I was going through the Kinni narrows last year. Four or Five boats were kind of blocking the passage. When I got up there, the boat in the middle was fighting a big fish…for quite a while. Using walleye gear…didn’t help. I’m thinking we watched him for 20 minutes before he got it into the boat. Everyone clapped and went on their way. Many were not fishing boats.
Seems like everyone enjoys watching the fight and hauling in a big one!

Although I don’t see catfishing taking over eye…or bass. I do see it as a growing sport. I just hope that all guides have your same attitude…90% go back…even at that…taking out 10% of the big fish is going to hurt the fishery…very fast….in my opinion.

    Lawrence,

How many guide customers will pay to fish from 8pm to 2am?

Sorry guys kind of lost track of this one. First I don’t think we kept a cat over 18 inches this year, but we still kept about 10%. Maybe 60 so far this year.

About the night question…all our cats come from just before sunlight till just after sundown, but I realize that many trophy hunters hunt cats at night. I still get several requests for Full moon trips, but your right the person probably would have to be pretty hard core to do the night thing. Heck I’m scarey enough in broad daylight.
