    Hey Guys

when we were fishing the WWA tournament in Redwing two weeks ago we caught about a dozen 3-6lb cats and they were hitting like there was no tommarrow. Just wondering if this is normal for this time of year with the water temp only being in the 40’s I don’t know much about cats except for what I read here but man were they ever fun.

    thanks

    Yesssss… Another Walleye fisherman converted.

It’s common for the cats to go on a binge shortly after ice-out. The wind blows winter-killed shad into the shallows and the cats move in to aid in the cleanup. I’ve heard stories and read articles about the fishing at Coralville and Rathbun resevoirs that are the stuff of legends. I’ve wanted to try it the last two years but the social coordinator has me booked pretty heavy in spring.

After that, I think they slow down until spawn – sometime in mid-June.

yes, the cat action is really starting to pick up…. any backwater area that is near some current is great, I tried to slack water areas that were warmer…. they may hold cats but I couldn’t keep the turtles off…. they are hungry as well…. no flatheads to speak of yet… but the channels are feeding….. should only get better from here on in…. great news.. with the up and coming cat league forming it should be a fun year……

I got into the channels pretty good on weds. Picked up 20 of them on the sauk river. Nothing huge like 7lbs but great action

Channel cats are hitting great on Lake Zumbro also. Fish evening up till 9:30 with cut bait. (fresh chubs) They have been going nuts.

Nate, If you enjoyed catching those channels with the water temps in the 40’s, try catching them when the water temps warm up in the summer.

Channels are a little slugish when the temps are that cool, but still fun to catch!
