I caught this 41.5″ flathead while walleye fishing during the July 31st IDA Get Together Tournament. It hit a 1 oz. jig dressed with a 5″ Firecracker K grub.

I’d like to thank Ecnook and Dinosaur for resizing the photo for me. I just got the digital camera and am not very good at using all the features and software yet (and probably never will be).

That’s a dandy cat. Them big flats sure do like the big K-grubs.

No kiss Briank but I did send her back as quickly as we could get a measurement and a few photos. Last year I was fishing alone and caught a 40.5″ and didn’t get a photo so I was real happy to get a photo of this one which was a little bigger.

How long would it take you cat guys to bring a fish this size to the boat? I’m guessing it took me about 12 – 13 minutes. I didn’t want to fight it excessively but I thought I could straighten out my 4/0 semi-premium jig hook if I pulled any harder.

Boone…man, you have to givem a kiss before you send them back…otherwise they feel used!

You have to remember, most folks looking for cat’s know they are going to be fishing in or around wood cover. they have heavy rods with line anywhere from 60 to 100 lbs test. The drag is clamped down so there isn’t any drag….once the cat feels the hook he’s heading to cover. The idea is to stop the train and turn it around on the tracks. I’ve never landed a 40 lbser…but I’m thinking no more than half that time…if 5 minutes.

Make sure you have chapstick along…next time!
