Got out Friday with my buddy Bradd Sims, a fisheries biologist with the WiDNR and a catfish fanatic. Bradd has caught his share of bruiser flatheads on rod and reel this year….but today we were using hoopnets to sample catfish. We hauled up all kinds of nice channels…and one 13 lb. Flat, which for whatever idiotic reason I didn’t take a picture of…they always get me excited! Here’s a nice haul ( your set Dan )

Hey Jet? What brings them into a hoopnet? Just some cutbait?

Hey guys, question. Is chumming(sp?) legal in Mn or Wi. Not that I’m questions the tactics biologist use, just curious.

Hey Waterfowler – This should answer your question. I sent an e-mail to the MN DNR last spring and was told specifically that it is illegal to chum in Minnesota. As far as Wisconsin goes I took the following off of the following Wisconsin DNR website http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/water/fhp/fish/faq/index.shtml#faq_equipment:

What is chumming, and is it legal in Wisconsin?

Chumming refers to the process of scattering ground up fish (known as chum) in the water as bait, and is illegal in Wisconsin, since it would result in waste being deposited on a stream or lake bed.

However, chumming is acceptable if the angler can retrieve the fish attractant/bait after he or she is done fishing (such as fish parts in a mesh bag). Remember that depositing any sort of fish entrails into the water is illegal! All waste should be thrown into the trash, not the water.

cool pics jetcat………. When ya bait the hoopnets with the soycake stuff, you seem to get a variety of fish…….heck, we had some nets out that were filled from the tip to the last hoop (mostly carp..haha) and we had to go to shore just to pull the net in the boat.

the pic i posted is from 2 yrs ago when i was workin for the DNR…………..both from one hoopnet
