I had the opportunitie to fish for a few hours with my friend Catten Addict last night. We plunked in his River Pro around 8:30 last night to try out some new water (new for us).

I have to admit, Sean has no concept of what channel markers are on the river and it takes a while to get use to being 20 feet from shore moving at 25 to 47 mph. I found myself braceing everytime we approached a wing dam. I did stop bracing myself once I learned the secret….close your eyes.

It’s nice that those Pros don’t have a skag. Seems like if it’s wet, we’ll be going through it.

I can’t recall if it was our first stope or second when the action started to pick up…not the fishing action…but the bat action. It was fun to see Catten Addict scrambling for his hat (he doesn’t have enough hair to mention), I on the other hand just thought they were big mosquitos and kept trying to blow them away from my nose. I have to admit, I don’t think I’ve ever had a bat pick off a bug just off the end of my nose before…

It wasn’t too long when the fish started moving to…we had a couple run an drops, but everything was very much non commital. I had one good run that ended in a plump little channel cat comeing into the boat. I have to tell you, when Sean sees a catfish you can see the male chemical start to take over his body. The way he was talking to it and stroking it…it was truely an experiance. I stayed in the front of the boat….

Although it was a Channel, Sean wanted to show Suzuki that they can be picked up without protection…and it can be a romantic experiance…wish I had brought candles!

    More to come later….

Moving to a new spot which we both thought was prime, we were a little discouaged for lack of action. This gave me pleanty of time to give CA some guff about the “little” toothpicks he was using for flathead rods.
While we were talking about moving the sweet sound of a clicker went off …well it sounded more like an alarm.

Like the expert catman he is, he was all over his rod…like jam on bread. He was asking me earlier if the rumor was true about once you hear the clicker you count to 7 while feeding it line then gentle taking up the slack and then setting the hook. I think he’s been visiting the wrong forum too much…
He engage the reel and the fight was on. This was to be CA’s first Flat and it was going to be a dandy! I couldn’t see his whole face…but imagine the expression of someone in a male prision shower, picking up the soap for the first time….that’s the best I can do to describe the look on his face when moby decided to REALLY run.

I was trying to blame the cat getting to the wood on his “light” heavy action St Croix cat rod, but it wouldn’t have made a differance. Before she got into the wood, she dragged us, the boat and the 20 lbs navy anchor back 50 feet to the wood. To be honest CA didn’t have a chance. I guess we should have tied to a deadhead.

Either way he got to feel the true power of a REAL catfish.

We worked that snag for a few more minutes and moved to a new location. Excited that we got to feel a “good” one, but a little discouraged because we didn’t see it.

Personally with the run and CA’s comments when he engage the reel and listening to the drag burning….I though it was just about as good as seeing it!

It was getting close to quitting time…we both had family things to do today….although his was fishing, mine was only sitting on a paddle boat in Taylors Falls wishing I was fishing…

We were just going to pack up and head home when a rod started thumping away quite rapidly. I forgot to open the bail! CA knew it was a mere morsel of a fish compared to the brute he was into before, but played him into the boat.
We took a couple pictures. Now you have to remember, this is CA’s first true catfish. As much grief as he give SOME people on the board about using gloves I was a little surpised at the look on his face when he felt the cat’s tongue on his fingers…I guess it goes back to the whole prision look again…after a few seconds he felt “way too comfortable” with this fish…I had to remind him that it was a small young adult and that we should get it back in the water…..soon!

Had a great night with you CA! (as much as one guy can with another guy) We’ll be doing it again…soon!

PS…although the fish facts are true above, the “editorial comments” maybe spun to my favore…somewhat.

You’re night sounds similar to ours. Pretty slow overall. 1 solid channel where you saw us right at sun down and another weak run that we didn’t hook up. We moved back down to pool 4 as we saw you guys coming back out of the cut and set up on a second spot. We had one run here that was powerful and deliberate. I engaged the reel dropped the tip and came back with all I was worth! Fish on… and it was a piggie! Pulled hard for 4 or 5 seconds and then it was gone. No idea what happened. The hook set felt like it hit home. The hook was sharp as heck and came back in good shape. I guess it just didn’t stick deep enough.

Might try again tonight. I’m watching the resort for the next week so I might just have to sneak out about sun down a few times to scratch the itch.

It was a good night out, nice cool weather, no wind, and no bugs, too many bats though I would loved to see the beast that grabbed the sucker and made his run heating up the drag and pulling my RP, next time two anchors or tie off on a dead head or tree on shore, i have caught lots of big channels before well over 20lbs, but I have never “AND THE ROCK MEANS EVER!!” felt the power that thing displayed on the end of my line. I know ill be back soon, but ill be checking the rearview to make sure no one follows me

Hey Mealy worm, ( aka Brink)
It sounds like you also have a little “experence” dropping the soap in prison showers.
Is that where your expression “rock on” comes from?
    See ya

    Suzuki…all I can say is …wink wink…nod nod….

You know how we were planning on getting a flat for you to hold without a glove…and I was telling you about how good Catten Addict was about holding the cats? Well I just realize that he’s not that far above us…In the pictures…his not kissing them on the lips…it was more of a peck on the cheek….

Now to rip on myself…I just re read my post…I have now learned that one shouldn’t try to post raw (without using a spell checker) material with only 3 hours of sleep….whew!

At least I was talking about the right fishing partner!
