Bait size

I have been reading some threads regarding Minnesota’s regulations governing bait size. Seriously guys don’t sweat it. A 5-6″ bullhead is gold in my book…I can keep more of them alive in my bait cooler, they are usually easier to find, and most importantly Flatheads don’t care. My largest Flathead (low forties) came on a 4″ bait. That size is all I use now and it has not hurt my success. And I’ve caught 10 lb Flatheads on 12″ suckers. The most important thing is the baitfish’s activity level…the livelier the better, change their water a lot and aerate them adequately. Don’t cast the same fish 15 times…these types of things will ensure that your baitfish is lively, I treat mine like pets. I will admit I use, and love green sunfish…not being able to use them, now that is a legitimate gripe!!

I agree that a baits activity level is crucial. I can’t vouch for bait size because I used to use about 6-9 inch bullheads always, along with creek chubs. I took your advise and kept some of those smaller bullheads yesterday – and caught fish on them last night. Minnesota laws regarding flathead bait just aren’t fair. I will continue to harp on this point until we get things changed – which we are working on.
