Nice pix Dirk! The St Croix has dropped about two feet and the currant is starting to be manageable….
Now If I could just luck into a stray flatty! I’m getting to the point of editing myself into one of your pictures…It would make me feel better!
June 23, 2004 at 2:31 am #309647Nice pictures Dirk. Were those all caught in one night? How do you catch fish like that when the water in on the fall. Here on the Ohio it is hard to even catch a channell when the water is falling. our river has been high all year also it is starting to fall now as long as we don’t get anymore rain.
June 23, 2004 at 2:47 am #309651Jeremy, I went fishing with Dirk twice. I swear he has a pocket of Fairy Dust that he sprikles in the water when I’m not looking.
Fish come out of the strangest parts of the river when he’s out there!
June 23, 2004 at 4:56 am #309664I wonder he he would give me some of that fary dust to use it sure would do me some good right now. I believe he knows what he’s doing. I have read some articles of his in the catfish insiders.
Dirk, any hints on how to catch those flatheads when the water in all the fall like that? Come on a little info won’t hurt.
Thanks, Jeremy99June 24, 2004 at 1:33 am #309791Those fish were caught the past two times out. I don’t know that the water dropping has a whole lot to do with things other than some of my areas that produce during more “normal” stages are starting to produce now. I make careful note of the stage level when I go out and after a while you just start getting the hang of when an area will produce and when it won’t – usually. The fish will be starting their spawn I would guess in the next 2-3 weeks??? That also helps determine were a guys fishes.
June 24, 2004 at 4:32 am #309811Got out tonight for a short time – these two, a 25 and a 9 pounder, hit almost at the same time (around 9:30). I’ve started catching them above snags again – the water’s becoming more fishable in my traditional spots. This was above a snag and I got them as they came out – about 5 feet in front of wood.
June 24, 2004 at 9:28 am #309820Flathead WI, where did you pick up your head lamp? What’s it called? As you can see my buddy has one also but he got his in a bait shop near Mille Lacs. I haven’t seen them around here yet. Thanks.
June 24, 2004 at 1:55 pm #309846I was just going to ask the same thing. How’s the battery life on the unit, how bright is it for tying knots etc… thanks!!
June 24, 2004 at 3:37 pm #309864I got mine at Ace Hardware in La Crosse – they have an OK sporting goods section. It cost 13 bucks and uses batteries the size of a quarter. It’s so light that I just wear it when I leave the house (sometimes 3 in the afternoon – I get funny looks at the gas station, etc…). Anyway, it’s great for the boat – bright enough for whatever you need – it has a wierd bluish light that you have to get used to. I wouldn’t use it on the sandbar, the beam is really diffuse so it doesn’t have great range. The batteries have lasted me about 12 trips now – those little bulbs must not use much – and it’s about as bright as ever. The guy who sold it to me said the batteries were about two bucks – we’ll see. It’s called “Cat’s Eyes” and it comes from Naschem, but that probably won’t help – it’s not easy to find – I tried to Google you up a source but couldn’t find the product at all.
Happy Hunting,
Matt
June 24, 2004 at 3:40 pm #309866Bob loves his. Very, very light weight. I like the fact that I don’t need a head strap for it. Three LED bulbs so you probably get a whole lot of battery life out of it. For tying, landing fish ect. it works good, at least thats my two cents. Flathead will have an opinion to.
June 24, 2004 at 5:19 pm #309892Thanks guys. I’m tired of wearing the headstrap version also. For $13.00, I’ll give it a try. I’ve wasted that much on coors light before.
June 25, 2004 at 1:09 am #309956I also bought that same light. It is awesome for digging around in the rod locker or getting gear ready for fishing in the dark. I got mine at Scheafers Boat Livery in Onalaska, paid $10. I was at a tourney and had the thing on all day. I couldn’t figure out why people were looking at me so funny. But anyway, they are an awesome lightweight light.
