I’m going to try that. How much weight do you suppose you’d need to hold that bait on the bottom – in current?

    on the bottom?!?!

After seeing that. I’m tempted to start fishing flatheads w/ big ugly topwater baits.

Blue…those damn bass work well for Flathead bait…only reason I can see to fish them….

Keep the white shirt though…as in another post…white doesn’t show the scum lines so bad…

Brian, for as much as you like to bash us ‘bass guys’ it makes me believe deep down inside you wanna be one of ‘us.’ I think they call it denial.

pretty boring. Since we have no good cat pix to look at. Why do bass fisherman participate in tournaments during the spawn? I recently watched 15 boats from a tournament fish the same spawning beds over and over. They took every mature fish and none of them came back. How can you folks call yourselves sportsmen? I bet I don’t get many responses to this question.

    I’ll give you a response. How’s that!!!!

It’s been scientifically proven that many of those fish will return. Maybe not all of them, but most. On top of that, those fish will spawn and be productive.

I would however like to know how you came to the conclusion those fish didn’t come back. Please elaborate.

“How can you folks call yourselves sportsmen?” W/kev, don’t EVEN get me started on that comment.

The difference between Cat guys and bass guys is the smell.
Every year I see the cat guys fishing the cat migration and taking piles of fish. Heck the laws allow you to run lines for them and such just because they are so worthless. When they start allowing us to commercial fish bass under the rough fish regulations I might change my tune. Yeah I said it. Nothing more than a rough fish. Big ugly bottom feeders, we should change the forum name to “politicians”

The bass come into the pond and I watch them often when I come home from catting with my spotlight. I have been watching for about 7 years the same area. I vacation during spawn each year. I can see them plain as day. The tourney comes and they do not come back. I think the scientist that proved that probably has stock in Ranger Boats. It would seem to me that if bass fisherman cared about the propagation of their favorite species, they would leave them alone during the spawn. I even saw a couple jokers culling their catch even asked me for a pen so they could write down the weights of their dinks.

    Blue,

Your response sounds a lot like a much rehearsed political talking point.

Tight lines. Tournaments are fun. They just should not be held during the spawn.

    Jeremy,

I seem to have touched a nerve. I do not stereotype anglers. I was simply asking a question. I never keep a breeding fish ever and I return every bass I catch too.

Just giving you a hard time. This subject has been debated into oblivion so I was just poking fun. All us bass guys are wound up tight waiting for the river to come back down enough to go fishing. I do agree with your statements about protecting the spawn but the fish populations have not responded to the pressure. Overall I think mothernature keeps us in check better than anything we can ever concieve.

Whiskerdev, i’m not sure I follow. You said every year you watch these fish get taken from the same spot? That would tell me right there that these big fish keep coming back..Maybe not the SAME ones, but either way, it doesn’t seem to be hurting the fishery. Regardless of where these fish are, they will spawn….

The sportsman comment was pretty low. Bass fisherman and everyone involved go through great lengths to ensure Bass fisheries continue to get better. There are always bad apples, but that can’t be helped.

    But it’s all good!!

Wrong again! What do you want me to say. I’m sure you’ll try to refute anything I try to say and spin it to your favor.

Do I think fish the spawn in a tourney sucks? To that I say, “have you tried my eight pound Oreck? It’s got the most”…oh nevermind…..

I knew I could get a slow Friday afternoon to pass quicker with one good question. The fish do come back each year to spawn in the pond. Mother nature does have her way. As an amature fish watcher, I wonder how much better it could be if the fish were left alone while they are on their beds. Earlier this year I watched two males about 7 pounds attempting to spawn with a 5 pound female. They were so into it. I reached out an petted their bellies. Pretty cool. I too am stressed about the high water. Flatheads are not bottom feeders. I wouldn’t mind getting Jeremy into one one of these summer nights and get him to admit they are damn good fun and a challenge to find and catch. I have caught many bass this year already and only 2 cats but I still fish them because they are the only fish that tests my tackle.

I promise….I will never use the word “damn” and “bassfisherman” together in the same sentence!

Blue…this just goes to show, never pick on a lowly catfisherman…even a wannabe catfisherman…they come out in droves for the throat!

I wish I was knowlegable to talk about the spawn of bass, cats or eyes…heck, I’m still trying to figure out my own spawn….(do I return to bed after spawn?)

Anyway, tourneies don’t seem to be making a differance in the Croix…I’m still catchin them dam….(stop it) things like sunfish…and they are fun in there own way.

But the discussion is good. I’m seeing two sides to an issue I didn’t even know was out there.

Still all fisherman…PS…Blue, I hope you don’t drive a damn Ford!
