Fished the St Croix from 4:30pm to 10:30pm on 24 May. Water was going up from the recent rain so there was a little more current. Water elevation was 676.6 feet up from 675 normal elevation level. Water is still cold, 55 degrees on my locator when I cam off at 10:30pm. I had rain showers off and on with a cold breeze and it was basically cold and gloomy. I hate having to catfish in my long underwear – this is supposed to be a warm weather sport. I’ve got a fishing top for my boat and last night it was worth it’s weight in gold. Kind of like sitting in an ice house almost. Caught one decent channel cat on cut bullhead at 5:00pm, 28″ and 8 1/2 lbs. I’ve attached a picture but I need to practice my self timer photos – it didn’t turn out very good. Had a couple of bait clicker singing runs on cut bait about 9:30pm but they dropped the bait before I could respond. About 10:00pm I was in that normal catfishing fog mesmorized by the sound of the frogs, crickets, birds and the normal sounds of the river. Damn beaver slips up on the boat and gets about two feet away without me noticing him and he rises up and swats the water with his tail. I about crapped my pants. It’s been a slow spring for catting on the St Croix but things are going to break pretty soon. We need a run of warm weather.
