At what point do cats usually start biting in the spring?

    Carp Chaser,

For what it’s worth, I know of two nice flatheads that were caught last Sunday (March 17th) on Pool 4. I caught a 39″ off the tip of on one of the wingdams up near the dam and another guy I talked to at the ramp caught a 33 lber. He didn’t measure his and I didn’t weigh mine. Mine was hooked in the the side of the cheek so I think it was it a legitimate bite. I was jigging a ringworm. The other guy said his was hooked in the mouth. He caught his down closer to Everts. Funny thing… the guy said a kid in his boat hooked into what they thought was a snag and they broke off. A short time later he hooked his, like I said in the mouth, and the kids jig was stuck in the side of the fish.

Ya Hey chaser – Flatheads are carnivores, they really never quit biting !! They just relocate and miss the hook & line this time of year, especially when Walleye/Sauger dominate a hole! As the water warms and the Eye move shallow to spawn the Cats become dominate in the holes again. Next you’ll find as the water warms the shad forage moves shallow to do there thing, the Cats follow and thats why guys Bass fishing, guys jigging and guys trolling wdams, and flats start catch’em. Next comes prespawn (water temps 68-72′)and thats a whole subject in-itself. I should have an article that was published a few years ago on this great catfish period available on this site soon, if I’d get off my — and submit it to the crew, so stay posted.
