just thought i would post this question. Do you guys like to fish high water or low water if you HAD to choose. i know most of us fish high, when water is dropping, and low stages. but if you only had one weeknd to go all year……….. would it be during high water or low water.?

Personally, i have mixed feelings……..i think i would almost fish high water. even though the current is strong, and anchors get pulled loose alot, there seems to be alot of good holding areas. like log jams that are not usually sumberges….etc.

Neither for me…”normal” and “stable” are two words I like. Next is high water. Low is my least favorite. Last August when the water was low the flathead fishing got very tuff for me. I had only one pattern going and it was a one or two fish per trip deal. It did produce some huge fish though.

Since I’ve only been out 4 times in my life…I’ll have to pass on this question. But then again…since the water level is dropping right now…I’m going with dropping

Stable is the key. When you look at the corps of engineers website and see a straight line. Look at the weather report. If you see no wind, those are the best times by far. I have had a lot of good luck on low water. The fish seem to congregate in groups in deep holes. They can become very territorial in these holding areas. Sometimes moving just a few feet can put you on fish.

I would also have to say I like a stable water level. Inbetween high and low. When the river gets too high, it can get dangerous out there. When the water is too low, there isn’t enough current to hold fish in predictible locations. I had the same problem as Dirk last fall. All of my spots dried up due to low water levels and low current.

P.S. I went out channel cattin’ yesterday evening for a couple hours. Caught one channel and had lots of biters. They just didn’t want to commit. It was nice to catch that first cat of the year.
