Hey guys – time to start serious planning for spring catfishing. I see quite a few posts with people looking for bullhead bait spots. Here is a quick and easy way to find yourself some spots. The Minnesota DNR publishes a map of public boat accesses and fishing piers called “Twin Cities Water Recreation”. This map is available free from the DNR. Call this number: 651-296-6157 and they will send it directly to your home free of charge.
The brochure lists sites by county. Pay attention to the Key to Tables at the bottom of the brochure. It has a column that lists the most common species present for each site. Those marked with a BLB (black bullhead) or BLH (bullhead) will lead you to a bucket of bullheads. I guarantee you that you can find a bullhead site within a short drive of your house.
My advice when you go for your bait. Load your kids and every other kid you can lay your hands on into your vehicle. Give them all a fishing pole with a small hook with a worm on it below a small bobber and cut them loose. The more hooks in the water the faster your bait bucket gets filled. You bait hooks and take off the bullheads – your kids will have a blast and you will get bait. And you will get points from the wife for Daddy of the year.
You all owe me a beer.
