I have made some traps using soup cans and rope as I have read that can be effective at trapping them. The problem is finding the correct habitat. Should I be looking at drainage ditch type areas that don’t freeze out or more established creeks with clear water? I m in the south metro if that helps.

Yes. Try them both as long as they connect somehow to a body of water that has willow cats. Just need to put in the leg work to find them. Some guys say put a little dog food in the traps. If not that stuff a little weeds or leaves in them. Helps make them feel at home in the trap. Right now is also prime time for trapping them.

I usually give them away. Trapping cats soaks up a good amount of my spare time so usually dont have time to trap them and then fish with them.

I have to say I’ve never caught much on them either, but I used to trap them when I was younger for other people. They absolutely swore by them, and they paid good money for them. I used the money to buy my fishing gear. I don’t have the patients for soaking bait, and it always seemed like about the same time people started using them the crankbait bite started heating up. I’ll cast cranks all day over using live bait.

Cats are no good. If you have any I’ll get rid of them for you.
