Catch/Cook Perch on the ice. Really warm weather

Out in Colorado on the Western Slope, it’s turning into Spring pretty quick. This last weekend on 3/1, my GF and I went out during the mid 50 degree day and went after Yellow Perch to attempt to do a Catch and Cook episode on the ice. We were lucky enough to hit a big school of them on our first hole; and they never left for the entire time we were there D Action was non-stop!

Freshest fish and warm weather made for a really nice time. Ice was cracking and melting around me all day it seemed.
The ice thickness of the holes we drilled were all 16″ and by the end of the day they were 13.75-14″. It’s currently mid 60’s right now and probably won’t be able to hit that reservoir again after this weekend, if it’s even ice fishable then.

The Yellow Perch in this lake have a problem with being stunted and the people managing the lake have been wanting to get them out. I learned a lot about this lake this ice fishing season. We were lucky to hit a school that had mostly keepers…not keepers probably by most peoples standards up north on this forum lol.

Hope you guys enjoy the video!

Nothing much better than a perch fry. Looks like a good time. It’s not every day that you drill one hole and don’t have to move. Don’t worry about keeping smaller fish if that’s what the lake needs to encourage a better size distribution in future years.

It was a blast! Definitely the best success we’ve had by far going for perch…I was expecting to move around a lot. Wish it was always this easy, wouldn’t need the drill augur then haha. Ya after the day was over, I figured I should’ve just kept them for a fish stock or something.
