I’m sure they called the DNR to report what they speared so it goes against the quota too.

“Targeting perch” gill nets— walleyes are called “by-catch” or “incidental catch” and fit under a “cushion” over and above the base “quota”. 1000lbs. allowed per Band of “by catch”?? ( not sure on that “by catch” number but if it is that–that almost doubles this year’s potential harvest/quota)
Lake Mille Lacs media ignores the 2016 tribal harvest ongoing. Cedar Creek access full of Tribal boats and “U.S. Govermnment ” trucks Friday night and no Messenger reporters on hand? Where is the local media DECRYING–LOUDLY– Tribal members purposely killing walleyes ( no catch and release using spears and or “perch” gill nets”) as MOST of the Messenger readers and subscribers can NOT legally take ONE walleye via hook and line–all the while the reporters will write that the DNR is saying the spawning biomas is at “record lows” and NEEDS protecting.
Mille Lacs Messenger reporters and columnists ignore one side of the story yet are fine covering the non- Tribal “harvest” side of the story. Does this form/level of reporting send a ” we don’t give damn about you” MESSAGE to the MAJORITY of the Messenger subscribers–and send a MESSAGE of “support” the Tribal Regime? We always hear ” we cover the subject of Treaty Harvest and fishery management fairly”. Yet—Reporters attend non-Tribal meetings on the subject but ONLY make a phone call to get the “Tribal side”–instead of being on hand with camera’s in tow–reporting reality–first hand?
Mille Lacs Messenger management speaks/or lack of speaking– with forked tongue?

It sends a “Our pockets are getting fat” message to me Steve. There is only one reason not to cover both sides.

Anybody know what the winter harvest was for “anglers”?
The winter harvest goes for this year’s quota, correct? And if the “anglers” had a chance to keep a little fish, don’t see why the tribe can’t keep a lil fish.
If the DNR is gonna mismanage, they will at least mismanage equally.
Steve, I fully support the work you are doing. But I don’t think the Mille Lacs Messenger is either the problem or a significant part of the solution.
Media can help. But it will take Minneapolis/St Paul newspapers, television and radio to have the impact we need.

The major media outlets all watch for stuff from smaller local papers. So yes it does matter what the Messenger does. Balanced reporting becomes a issue when a bunch of your revenue comes from the Casino’s. But, the DNR should have a large presence during these activities but it seems they are no where to be found?
If it wasn’t for the resorts on that lake id just assume not put a single dollar into it and let the red skins deplete it…
They’ll do what they want knowing the tax payers will fix their constant rape of land and water..
It is a small percentage of the Mille Lacs tribe that partake in this raping of the resource. We need to be careful not to lump an entire people into the mold that so few fit.
one of the tribe members put a video on another websites page that has publicly been against tribal netting.. what he wrote just makes my blood boil “exersizing our treaty rights on mille lacs and loving it” i hope the spear goes through the floor of the boat and the sob sinks on em

Would you show show your quoted source, please?
They had a segment about Mille Lacs on channel 5 tonight. They called it a “mystery” why the walleye population was suffering. Interviewing DNR members they asked them, is this the toughest fishing mystery you have every had to solve…? No mention of Native American netting of coarse.

The DNR’s own “Blue Ribbon Panel” is now a mute point per that ch. 5 report. This ch. 5 report continues to have the DNR saying it is a “mystery on why the YOY are not surviving”. Yet the DNR’s OWN people clearly concluded it was the predation caused by the slot limit that is the “MAIN” reasoning behind the YOY demise. Now? “it is a mystery”??????
With a name like “Joey Barney” you know he is a direct descendant of Chief Flying Eagle….
Redskins?? Little harsh even for this topic.
…not saying your opinion is wrong but I have never looked at that term as being ‘harsh’ towards Native Americans. In fact most of them surveyed said that the term ‘redskins’ is OK with them (when asked about the NFL team…) RR

Go onto a rez and start throwing that term around, I dare you. You can cite whatever poll you want that is not accepted in the Native community.

Steve, You know what the Messenger is all about, or not about. You have some “history” with them. They are a small 9-5 media outlet, no way would they have someone out on Friday night at that landing with cameras and such. Would they? Plus you know the editor is married to a DNR CO. DNR at these activities? The DNR and the Messenger paper are in bed together, literally and figuratively!

Only time I’ll drive thru the rez is when my truck Gets full of garbage.roll down the window and do like the natives do…
In an attempt to get re-railed on topic….. I’d like to know where all this complaining was in the middle of winter when anglers were dragging lil eyes up from 25-30′ water?
So what hurts more, couple dozen guys chucking spears at night, or a mass of anglers pounding 2-3yr old eyes on the mud all winter?

You’re kidding right?:???: The difference is they were released. How many with 2 holes in their back are released?
So what hurts more,
couple dozen
guys chucking spears at night, or
a mass of anglers

Perhaps this helps, its a numbers game RR, I’m not going to explain it further.

They did? Please point me to the exact text where you claim they supposedly concluded this?

Trust me, you have proven your thoughts to all of us and we all come up with the same conclusion…
I assume you don’t fish Mille Lacs too often in the winter so I will try to explain to you like I am explaining it to a 5 year old. “You see Jonny, when the 12″ walleye you just caught is released back into the ice cold water of the lake it can live to be caught (or in the Indians case speared…) another day when it is bigger. You see Jonny they survive much easier when the water is cold after they are caught. In the summer they sometimes have a tough time surviving because the water is too warm and they end up dying after the long struggle.”
OMG…
