Awesome catch gentlemen. It sure feels good to get into them when you can.
I just wore the Spongebob bandaid so Marble Eyes wouldn’t be the only one with girl hands.
heading over in the am. did u drive on ? would like to take the permanant over. any tips on depths and presentations would be helpful also.
We did see a good number of trucks on the ice. There was about 12″ of ice. Deep water was the key, 30′ or more. Crappies were suspending 4-10′ off the bottom. Most fish came on spoons.
thanks for the info not sure if im going off 10th or wilderness if u see a white chevy and a white permanent feel free to stop for a cold one.
Stuck em again today Look for an upcoming report from IDO prostaffer Joel Nelson
Nice fish gut! I will be trying my luck tomorrow. Not sure what would be best, wilderness or the lure?
Did ok last weekend of Wilderness
Did good today and yesterday off the Rustic launch just past the County park
Nice! You guys earned those slabs… it was dang COLD out this weekend.
Guys have you ever marked so many Gills on the screen as this last two years… I have trouble staying on the walleye I’m after when they keep pulling in in schools again and again.. I’m beginning to wonder if there is a gill in The flowage under 9 inches… that being said you guys staying in the big brutes like that is amazing . especially when a lot and I mean a lot of guys on the 1st fishing for Crappies did very poorly. Pete is quickly becoming an even better Crappie and Catfishing venue than ever before. And almost every cat is 4lbs up…. but the sad part is that the Walleye fishing through the ice is getting weaker and weaker… we did see and catch tons of shorties though so maybe the future for walleye is bright.
The times we’ve been out for eyes, we’ve caught quite a few slot fish. The eaters have been hard ones to find, usually we catch a good number or 14 to 14-3/4 inchers. Last time we targeted eyes, I had two in about 5 minutes that just touched 15″ and both went back, because I was pretty sure they were going to shrink up 1/4″ to 1/2″.
We’ve had a 25-1/2 and several 20-22″ fish this winter, but the 15-20’s have been tough. I’ll be checking out a new spot in the next few days (not really a new spot, just one I haven’t fished through the ice yet). It’s my go to for early spring/late fall legal eyes.
Lawrence, where are you talking about the gills, in the main river channel?
Welcome aboard EUC
Look forward to meeting you on the water soon
Ive never caught a gill or even seen a gill caught there
I’ve caught a lot of gills on castle rock but never on petenwell. Gut, feel free to give me your coords for your crappie spot as I will be out there all weekend!
All this chatter about hard-water fishing ALMOST has me thinking about giving up on open water this month, dusting off the ice gear, do a little scouting on the east side, and looking for some of those slabs. But the 12 ft. winter boat is ready to go, and I’d imagine that the river below the Petenwell Dam is still wide open?? what’s a guy to do?
I imagine the river is still open but not to sure about the plowing situation. I’ll be driving by there this weekend on my way to the lure and i’ll check it out. I think i’m going to wait til next month to hit the dam. I still have the hard water fever. Will report on how we do on the ice this weekend on the mighty pete.
Not supposed to be as cold this weekend Targa so your truck should start
We will be out on Sunday somewhere
The boys put a whooping on the cats today
Yup put a new battery in it and its working fine now. Also got the four wheel drive, wheel bearings, ball joints, leaf springs, and master clutch cylinder fixed. $2300 later and my truck is ready for petenwell. I’ll be on the east side on saturday and maybe the west side on sunday. Good luck out there!
Looks like a little warm-up coming late next week. If someone happens to be close to the Petenwell dam, a report on the launch condition just below the dam, would be greatly appreciated. They usually plow it, but would hate to come all that way to see that it’s not accessible.
We catch walleye everyday, but the days of 35-50 a day ice fishing from 15 to 30 inches seemed to fade away about 5 years ago… and yes the year class that is just below, just at, and just above 15 inches looks good, but where the heck are the tons monster trophys a slot is supposed to give you???
Not just spots, lol, we actually have holes that are our go to spots for walleye keepers… only real difference I can see is they are in about 34-35 feet,( river channel), with a steep incline close by up into 27-28 feet, I’m talking a 7 foot rise in 25 feet, but the fish are still almost at the bottom… so they are not feeding off the 27 foot flat they are apparently being funneled along the face of it. Fifteen feet to 25 foot farther away from the flat the tip-ups bring up many unders…. so guess what if you wander out on the water and see a guys with guide customers and a serpentine line of about 20 tip-ups over about 100 yards , you will know that I have had finally had the time to follow that contour precisely for the full 100 yards. It’s a little weird , because the closest underwater timber I am aware of is under my buddies shanty about 150 yards away.
