Hi Guys, I wanted to post a picture for you trout guys… This is a lake trout carved in black walnut. The side shown is the outside (sapwood) section of the tree. I really like how the contrast of colors and grain shows on this side. The other side is all chocolate grain walnut. So kind of boring to me. I used an old section of red cedar for the base. She turned out great. The fish is 35 inches long.. Maybe a 36-37 if you pinched the tail )

Thanks guys! I appreciate it. This one was a fun carving to do. I will say these fish are a lot more time consuming than doing a bear, eagle, ect… But once done I feel it was worth the work. I will dig up a photo of the other side also and post it. It was a really nice piece of wood and did not pull a check/crack at all. I was really lucky there.

    Buschman,
Quick question. Do you carve the fins separately or is the carving a single piece? One of my uncles used to do some carving and would always carve the fins separately. He said, otherwise they were too easy to break.

    Thanks again Guys!
I carved the peck and pelvic fins separate and glue them in. The others are carved in and left a little thick because of that sap wood. It is brittle but looks really cool left in.

I would say somewhere around 40 hours total. From picking up the piece of wood to the final coat of finish. It goes from a log to a fish in under an hour but every step of detail take me a bit. Even the base for this one was almost a carve in itself. My wife still tells me it takes longer than I admit to )

Here is the other side to the fish. Nice as well but I favor the sap wood side.

    Amazing work Joe.

I like the little JB brand on the base also.

Good eye! My buddy gave me the idea for the signature.. I liked it and was easy to carve in so went with that.

    I appreciate everyones comments.
