Carrying handgun during Rifle season

Does anyone know the rules about carrying a handgun during rifle deer season if you don’t have a permit to carry?

I am not hunting with it but rather just for protection. This would be on State Forest Land that I access via our land. I picked up a sidearm (Springfield 9M) after a couple of us have come upon wolf sneaking out to stand in the dark. It’s also for home defense. Other members have carried a sidearm during deer season (most not having permits to carry) but most of those guys hunt on our private property (if it matters).

Obviously unloaded if riding in a vehicle (4 wheeler in this case). It is 1.25 miles back to my stand from the shack so sometimes we take the wheeler.
    Thanks for the confirmation.

I think if it’s legal to use for deer, you’re fine. If not,you can’t. Pretty sure the cc permit doesn’t override dnr.
    Iirc from yrs back.

Can I hunt with a handgun?
    • Persons age 18 or older may carry a handgun to hunt or target shoot.
    • Persons under age 18 who meet firearms safety requirements (see page 35) may
carry handguns for hunting under the supervision of a parent or guardian.
    • Unless licensed to carry a weapon under the Minnesota Personal Protection Act,
a person may not possess a firearm while bow hunting for deer.
    • A person may take bear and elk by archery while in possession of a firearm.
    continued
    • Persons with a permit to carry a weapon under the Minnesota Personal
Protection Act may carry their handguns uncased and loaded while hunting
and while traveling to or from hunting locations by motor vehicle.

It needs to be a legal caliber to hunt with or you need to have your permit to carry from how I read everything in the 2017 rules and regs.

Realtree is correct. It needs to be a caliber legal to hunt with if you do not have your carry permit. If you do, all rules are off and you are free to carry it whenever you’re hunting. And saddletramp is kind of right, the carry permit does not override the DNR, except the DNR permits the carrying of handguns if the person has a valid carry permit.

Unloaded and in a case on 4 wheeler without carry permit. No to bowhunting unless a permit holder. Also without permit you cannot conceal the pistol IE cannot be in a pocket or loaded in backpack your coat cannot cover it it must be in plain sight. 9mm is a legal caliber for Firearms deer.

Cannot conceal is key. Outside holster unless you have a CC permit.

I always wondered what the law states about handguns in MN. Can I open carry my loaded 9mm when I go shopping for instance. I don’t have a conceal permit because I have never considered the need. Some clarification needed…tia.

I do not think MN is a open carry state. Except for sporting purpose you cannot carry handgun without permit. MN is a permit to carry. You are not required to conceal. WI Used to allow open carry but do not know for sure
