Amazing how so many people want to make immediate ties to politics.

Hard not to when the president got a message out in record time saying that the cost to rebuild would be handled by the government.

Political ? Or just the right thing to do ? With the bridge out its costing 15 million dollars per day to the economy .

Well the government should get to push fixing the bridge but best be also going after that ships insurance also. Hope someone behind the scenes takes that cause up

Biden actually said as much. Something to the effect of not waiting for all of that to be hashed out and getting it paid for with federal funds upfront. I would think they’ll be getting “their” money back from somebody’s insurance.

To be done or start building. A bridge of that form is a monstrous job.

Maybe they can use the same foundations that are there ? But yeah, I would guess 2 years, maybe slightly under.

I would guess they were all damaged in this accident and that the new bridge will be a completely different design. If they are going to redo the bridge it would be best to build all new. Just like 35 when that happened.

    Done –
Some of the Engineers in the US are F’n brilliant.

TODAY – they already have renderings of the new bridge ready to submit.

It will be built offsite and and shipped to the location same as 35W bridge.
They will have a timeline with penalties for being late and bonuses for completing early.
My guess, they will receive a bonus.

You would think they could at least bite their stupid lip with the damn conspiracy bs til the bodies can at least be recovered. Maybe have some sympathy people lost their fuching lives.

I dont think there is any dang conspiracy here at all. It obviously was a mechanical failure of some sort. I just found it interesting that it appeared to steer into that piling, but its hard based on distance, being dark, the video being sped up, etc to really gauge that.

8 knots is just over 9 mph

They said at that speed the ship would need about 4 miles to STOP at that speed. Good news. The Corp of Engineers is sending 1,100 people to the site. Sure that will lead to the fastest most cost-effective solution. Be lots of greasy pockets when this is done.

Just think what it will take just to get the metal superstructure out of the river.

Who paid for replacing the 35-W bridge?

Who paid for replacing the 35-W bridge?

Being it was neglected and not maintained, not ran into by a boat, I would guess an interstate bridge would be federal funds.

The momentum of that ship going 8 knots is just shy of 4.3 billion lbs-ft/s
That is one heck of a force hitting that bridge.

Right I read something yesterday that insinuated that it was a new bridge it would still be standing.. I guess probably parts of it would be.

I got to thinking yesterday while watching the press conference. Reporters were asking the typical questions you expect them to ask like how long will this rebuild take? How long until construction begins blah, blah, blah. I know they’re doing their jobs but there’s no way any of that was answerable at this time. I started wondering if there is any type of federal “pre planning” on critical infrastructure like this bridge is? I mean, could (or should) there be design and engineering done that could jumpstart reconstruction on disasters like this? Whether human error, equipment malfunction, terrorism or natural disaster, would it be prudent to have specific “pre planning” in place? I know, I know…money would of course be the big obstacle but I guarantee, scrambling to get this bridge up and running properly is going to cost a bundle as well. Hopefully they will get it rebuilt in a timely manner and my thoughts go out to the victims.

BBC was doing a piece last night and the reporter suggested that it could be bad gas. Then says they asked a mechanic and the mechanic said “yup bad gas can affect engine performance”. So the reporter says, ” the investigation continues but all signs point to bad gas”. WTF. No wonder people are spewing random conspiracy theories they have just as much credibility as the reporters.

The talking heads on SM don’t understand the situation at all.
Between the not understanding the logistics and dangers of cleaning the disaster up to not understanding why the bridge collapsed from a ship going 9 mph.

Like Gimruis says, it is sad people are making this political.

I don’t give a crap what side of the fence one is on – but what I see on social media blaming Trump / blaming Biden and the poor tasting memes is disgusting on this terrible accident. People just like you and me lost loved ones. How about support them.

And instead of promoting these wild conspiracies, etc. How about being a part of the solution on figuring out how to bring our country closer together….

Unfortunately with the current state of the political climate I dont see any way we can come together. Social media and MSM shares a lot of the blame as well.
