I love using a fly reel on my panfish set ups, light weight, helps with line twist, etc. I have an okuma SLV and the only downfall is the aluminum body, they get super cold in winter. Do they make any sort of composite frame ones? I’m not talking about in-line reels, those aren’t what I’m looking for.

They do make them but they are $$$. Why don’t you like the inline ice reels? They have a longer stem so you can fit you glove on them and have gearing options that are not just 1:1.

I’ve tried a few of them and they all seem off balance and awkward. You spend money on a nice rod and then throw a brick on the handle

I will agree that they are off balanced. So I attach them off center of the rod so when I look down the blank it sits balance. I have contact different manufactures on a design idea to correct the balance. But none of them have done it.

Frabil straight line 101 reel is a graphite reel. Not as cold to the hand but it’s also not as smooth as an aluminum fly reel.
