Looking for some guidance. I left work today, and my ’04 Accord wouldn’t start. Battery is strong, but I could just hear a click when I turned the key. Jumping it made no difference. I kept cycling the key, and eventually, it turned over like normal and started. I’ve shut it off twice more and repeated–a dozen or more key turns with a click, and then she fires right up.

Is it likely a dying starter? Is there a way for me to be sure before I replace it?

sounds like the solenoid is on its last leg,or there is a dead spot in the armature, take it to a shop and have it tested before replacing it.
the solenoid has contacts in it that carry the battery voltage to the starter motor when engaged, and they may be about burnt out.
I am lucky as I have a shop near mine that rebuilds them cheaper than what you can buy a starter for at a parts store with a better guarantee.
before I forget, the solenoid is part of the starter.

Usually the 3rd or 4th reply is off topic and/or a little ‘smart aleky’ but i can’t think of anything good so i’ll just shut up.

    Lol! Thanks.

We’re heading out of town, so she’ll sit in the garage and I’ll worry about it when we get home.

Check your battery connection and for corrosion if its corroded pour some warm coke or bakin soda water…otherwise most likely your starter/starter solenoid

    Good advice so far.

I’d check battery connections first. Clean them even if they look great. Sometimes that’ll do the trick.

If that doesn’t work, hook up a positive lead to the starter where the positive cable goes to. If it cranks, it’s more than likely the solenoid.

With time being more valuable to most, if it is the solenoid, I’d just throw a whole new starter on it. If you like farting with stuff you might be able to replace just the solenoid. But I would probably just replace the whole unit with a new starter after making sure that’s what it is.

Ignition switch would be after that, but hopefully it’s not that.

I mulled it over and just brought it in. Hopefully, it’s just the starter and is fixed quickly.

Ralph Wiggum! I’m highjacking your thread. Are you a Johnnie?!
I was trying to figure out how to PM you but doesn’t look like the ido forum has that feature so here I am. I’m an ’06 grad and saw your Johnnie football shirt in a pic on the forum about catching suckers!
