I saw the header and said Gabe….

Then Geo Metro at that! jester

My first car was a 4 door Metro. Chronic green was the color and its name. Big ol 3 banger. Use to fill the tank for $9. Would last 2 weeks. Loved that car, fit 9 dudes to baseball practice once in high school. Smelled burning rubber the whole way from wheel wells smashing on tire.

It actually handled really well in the snow from what I remember as well. But I knew how to drive it. Good luck on the whole mpg thing, in your price range might be tough considering you are looking at really used.

As a sportsman over a decade later I wouldn’t think of buying one. Id look at used Astro van, AWD, in that price range. Surprised what you’ll find. Solid engines, front end issus time to time but no major fixes. Good luck.

When was the last year they made a Metro? How can this possibly be a newer car?

I drive a 04 Cavalier as my commuter car, just for the gas mileage and man, is that thing a POS.

    geo metro

In the US, the Metro carried a Geo nameplate from 1989 through 1997, and a Chevrolet nameplate from 1998 to 2001.

What year cavalier you have Doug ? I own a 1999 and it is a sweet little car, but mine is from Oregon.

Look for an old Honda civic hatchback. Easy to work on and a lot space in the back for gear.

I drove a chevy sprint, a precursor of the geo metro, during my high school years. I lived a bit under 50 miles from school – 17 miles from the nearest paved road. The car was a beast, better than a 3-wheeler IMO. If I remember right, I got around 50 miles a gallon back in the late 80′. I got it stuck once in a mine pit and recall having a couple of girls push it out of the mud rather easily.

I certainly wouldn’t overlook a slightly older used sprint if you can find a deal on one.😃😃

I’ve got a pretty clean Jeep Compass for sale. Little out of your price range, but it gets 25-28 mpg, has 4wd, and plenty of room for gear. Plus it’s presentable for taking the ladies out–

If you’re just looking to have something to haul a portable ice shack with, then honestly a vehicle with a 4 cylinder engine and room in the back would be best. An example would be a late 1990’s Subaru Outback, maybe a Mazda Potege’ 5 hatchback, Chevy Tracker, Suzuki Sidekick and other cars along that line.
Another thing to look at…as much as I hate to say it, would be a mini van. Yep, some get MPG just on the bottom of your range, and if you remove those seats you have room for a portable ice shack, auger, buckets, etc.

But since you already state you have a truck to haul ” ‘Ol Blue” (your boat I assume?) then why not just use that for hauling the ice shack and drive a high MPG Civic when hauling isn’t needed?

Just my $0.02 since I’m also looking into something like a 4 cylinder Ranger or S10 pickup soon

im on my 3rd geo/chevy/toyota prism in 6 years. bought them all for 500$ and they are bulletproof. last one limped into california through the summer desert sun on a surfing trip and i left it on the coast. current one has 237k and still going strong. i get about 32-35 mpg. the cars are all built with toyota parts. they are extremely reliable and because they are boring and relatively ugly they are cheap. look for one of the chevy or geo ones as they are identical to the toyota models but they cost less.

About a month ago a bought a “newer car”. 1991 Pontiac 6000LE. 37,000 miles on it. Found it cheap and no rust. So yes there are “newer cars” out there. Not many but look around. Of course this will be ran into the ground and driven.

If I’m not mistaken the Geo is popular up at LOTW. Guys put tracks on them.

That’s what you need, one with tracks.

Don’t have 2 vehicles. I’ve done the math many many times and have NEVER been able to see any savings owning a gas guzzler and a small car.

The cost of the car, insurance, gas, oil, tires, maintenance and risk of failure will never save you in the long run.

Btw when I did the math on a $3000 car, I found that I’d start to see savings in 4 years. Assuming it never needed tires, brakes, or repairs.

really? ive had pretty good luck doing that scenerio. But a difference is my cars cost 500$ and last me years. ive had good luck with that and i got my truck for a song too. I have a golden rule when it comes to cars and its served me relatively well: Either buy really really cheap or almost new. This way you minimize your risk. If i buy a car for 500$ and it breaks the next week well then im out 500 which sucks but ill get over it. An almost new vehicle should not give you any problems. Its the in-betweeners that bother me. In my experience a 10k car has just as much of a chance as breaking down as a 3k car or a 3k car can break down as easily as a 1k car. the difference is when you spend that much on something its an investement and you feel obliged to keep on investing otherwise you are out a lot of money.

Gabe i did a quick search for prism/prizm on craigslist and there are a few out there for cheap. this would be a good choice for you IMO

Im also betting that Gabe is under 21 or under 25 which would cost him much more in insurance than the latter.

I also forgot registration cost as well.
