Getting all packed and ready to go on a far North Canadian Brook Trout trip…Wow, the excitement of trophy sized Brook Trout (or Speckles as Canadians call them) is really getting me jacked up.
This week we are flying into a remote roadless Native village 400 miles North of Thunder Bay. From there our Native guide will boat us in another 40 miles through lakes and a river system to the Main base camp. From there we traverse class II rapids with 16′ boats and freighter canoes in search of world class Brook Trout.
The river we will be fishing is a huge tributary to one the main river systems in Ontario draining into Hudson’s Bay. A quick phone call with our guide today and we were able to go over lures, tackle, and equipment. He reminded me not to undersize our tackle as the Brook Trout may average 3 to 4 lbs. He said the largest Brook Trout on this river system he has caught was pushing 10 lbs.
We will fish both spinning and a fly rod. For spinning tackle I think our main stay will be 3/4 oz. KO Wobblers and big 1/2 oz. no 15 Panther Martin Spinners…Big tackle for big fish.
For fly fishing, we will throw both mouse patterns and Dahlberg Divers. Special thanks to Rootski for hand tying these beautiful flies for me. I can’t wait to try these flies.
Hopefully, I will report back in a week or so with a successful trip report.
