Well the fall 2021 trip is in the books. Overall it was another great trip. The whole border crossing process went well. It’s crazy how few people there is crossing the border. We drove right up to the window without a delay both ways. The weather was decent. We had 2 days where the wind was more than we wanted to fight so we went golfing and rested up those days. They have a great golf course up there. It really is a incredible course for way up there in Canada. That is why it’s great to have such a long trip planned because there is almost always a few really windy days. We had no rain at all which is a 1st. They had a ton of rain the few weeks before we arrived so I was a little worried. Water temps where still really warm for this time of the year. It was around 64 deg. All trip. It’s normally in the low to mid 50’s this time of year there. I think this effected the fishing some. Overall the # of large pike over 40” was down from normal. I think we ended the trip in the upper teens to low 20’s. Our last trip I think we had 46. We did catch a ton of fish in the 35-40” range so it was still a blast. We didn’t fish any walleyes but did hook two really nice ones on the large pike baits but were unable to get either into the boat for a picture. I think both were over 28”. Had a trolling motor issue which is not good that deep into Canada. Think a circuit board fried on a rather new Minkota. The auto stow feature stowed it in the wrong position and it went dead. We tried everything we could think of or find on a internet research to fix it no luck. There was no repair shop in a reasonable distance to repair it. We were able to find a replacement one to purchase. So that’s what we did. We also each took a hook to the hand. Just a price you often pay when hand landing that many pike. It’s usually the smaller ( 30-35” ) fish that end up getting you and that is the case this time as well. I feel good that I believe all the fish we caught and released survived. Well here are a few pictures of some of the over 40” fish we caught. W

Fishthumper it looks like you caught a pig with a northern pattern on it.
September 16, 2021 at 12:42 pm #2061260One item to note. I would not go fishing for large pike or Muskie’s ( or any fish for that matter ) without a set of knipex Cutters with. These came into use several times on this trip. Often to help release the fish alive but also to cut hooks in body parts. I can also not tell you how much easier it is to remove hooks with pinched barbs. I would not have a problem if that was required. Much easier on the fish and MUCH MUCH easier on a person with a hook in the hand or other body part. I would also spend the few extra $ to buy the knipex brand of cutter. I’ve used several knock off ones and none of them cut as good as the knipex.

Going back on the 24th, can’t waitI wish we were. I think by then or shortly after the water temps will be down some. I really think the cooler water gets the bite fired up.
Have a Great Trip. Post some pictures when you return !!!

The knipex that are popular for cutting hooks are mini bolt cutters.
