We’ve camped in Voyageurs on Rainy the last 4 years. We talked about something different next year. Does anyone know if they have a similar camping situation on the Canadian side of Rainy or on Canadian part of Lake of the Woods? Something with established campsites like Voyageurs. Thanks

Not similar on Rainy. As far as I know there are no established sites on the Canadian side. Certainly none that are on a reservation system or I don’t think even on any of the maps. In addition there are not may places where you could get a tent on the north arm while at the same time have a safe place for your boat.

Canada also treats US citizens a little differently if you want to camp on Crown land(public). You need to get permits and I think it’s pay by the night. For locals it’s free.

It should be noted if you are staying with a resort in Canada you may camp on Crown land for free during your visit.

I believe there are different limits for fish if your staying on crown land compared to staying at a resort as well. EH.

Thats correct. Whether you buy the non-res conservation or sport license, if you camp you’re only allowed to keep the conservation license limit. Only way you can take home 4 fish is if you buy the sport license AND stay at a resort.

I too have been interested in primitive camping somewhere in the NW angle area along the shores of LOTW. Is it as simple as finding enough of a clear space for a tent along the shoreline? Or are there established campsites somewhere?

Most of Crown land is off limits to camping for non-residents. They ended that back around 1991. The only places you can gypsy camp are in very remote places. If you want to fish their resources you need to spend your money at a resort.

Not true at all. Some areas (green zones, conservation reserves, Parks, etc.) are off limits to non-residents. The vast majority of crown land is open to non resident camping with a $10/person/night permit.

LOTW is open to crown land camping outside of Whitefish Bay. There are some established sites, but no map or reservation system.
