Yep this was pretty much decided on weeks ago. They just waited until a week before the current deadline to officially announce it. I do like that they are taking it a month at a time so they can make a informed decision based on current Info. rather than just shutting it down several months in advance. We will just have to wait and see what happens as we get closer to July 21st now. With 2 more resets before our planned fall trip in Early to mid Sept. I’m still holding on to some hope. We may be able to even make it possible if it opens by Mid. Sept. although that would be the latest we’ve been there. Its getting real cold by then up there.

Yep. Our group was originally scheduled to the first week of June. The operator was able to push us back to June 22. Now that date is a no go.
We have another trip with another camp on August 15 so we’re clinging to hope that one will happen.
It’s looking less likely though after seeing Trudeau’s comments.

We had a June trip planned as well. In fact we would have been there right now. You are probably correct about it not being likely even for Sept. but I’m still holding on to some hope. If the total loss of Revenue by this point hasn’t changed Trudeau’s views, I don’t see how his view will change by fall when most of the economic damage has already been done.

There’s a lot more to Canada’s overall economy than fishing resorts/lodges.

Yep – But its a big part of it in the summer months there. Its the part that matters the most to resort owners or those who make the majority of their income a year from it.

    Yep.

Tourism only accounts for 2% of their economy (gdp).

Obviously that number is much higher for NW Ontario, but Trudeau doesn’t reside in Sioux Narrows

It appears that another extension is inevitable. August 21 is in the works now.

Its quite possible that the US-Canada (and US-Mexico) border may not open up for months. I think they will keep doing this in a piecemeal approach one month at a time but unless something drastic happens here in the US, Canada isn’t going to agree to open back up.

It’s official. Border closed to non-commercial crossings until at least August 21. Just announced.

Talking to family members up there I can’t imagine it is going to open anytime soon. Specifically in Manitoba they are enjoying their perfectly normal lives.

Have to agree. With the US being COVID central for the entire world, why would Canada want to throw open the doors to us? IMO forget August 21, highly unlikely travel will be allowed to resume even by October 21.

So much for this year’s trip. Really missing the annual trip this year, I know first world problem, but it sure is a lot of fun.

Yep – Not looking good for the fall trip at this time. We’ve decided that if it were to open by Sept. 21st we’d still make the trip. This is a little later than we normally go, but with missing the Spring trip I think we would take the chance on slightly cooler temps and still go. Not holding out much hope but hanging onto a little.

We’re not even allowed to go to New York without quarantining for two weeks. I see no chance Americans will be able to travel to Canada in 2020.

Yes the extension thru August is nearly certified. The Canucks are dead set against USA tourist with the current up tick. At this point I’m calling this year lost for me personally for Canada as I wont go after August. I’m concerned for next year but I’m guessing the loosening will begin around November 4th.

They really need to ban New York from Wisconsin and Minnesota along with Illinois, California to name a few

Yeah, not hopeful for possible trip back to Manotak in September. Oh well, I am very content with the border lakes. Plenty of fun to be had there too! Maybe bump into some of you fellas up to Crane-Namakan or Rainy area this fall!

I know a few people that have family cabins in Ontario. They just want to check on their properties to make sure it hasn’t been ransacked by a bear this spring.

It is my understanding that the closer is just for land crossing. How about a cheap flight across and rent a car?

Might seem feasible but any travel to Canada or Mexico by land, sea, or air for leisure purposes is prohibited. Only essential activities (like shipping goods) is allowed.

Not only that but I think Canada also still has a mandatory 14 day quarantine for any essential visitors (similar to what NY is now doing).

My mistake on the previous post. You can still travel to Mexico right now but many of their tourism businesses are shut down.

I’ll have a Sept 5th thru 15th trip lost. But, I can’t think of any reason that I shouldn’t. Health of the Canadian people is far more important then some fish. Lord willing i’ll be around for many more opportunities.

Won’t work. Air travel to Canada is “essential only” and even then they have a mandatory 14 day quarantine period on arrival. And yes, they are enforcing it. In fact, news reporters seem to revel in getting stories of Americans getting busted for quarantine violations. Fines are pretty hefty and for an American, I’d think your passport would also be flagged with a big “not welcome in Canada” for future visits.

We were booked Aug 8-15 fly-in out of Red Lake, Ontario. No choice but to push it out to 2021.

I am up on Leech Lake right now…. it is busier than usual and word on the street is because the border is closed and is a back-up plan for some folks….

Winnie is a way better backup plan this time of year.

And Lake of the Woods is a better backup plan than Winni!

I have a family who is in his 80’s and it stinks that he misses out on a summer on the Island. It would be nice if there would be some way that people who own property or in his case an island could go check on their property.

We had a tripped planned for early June that was canceled and that was depressing. I really look forward to that trip all year. We went up last year over MEA the weather was beautiful and the fishing was great. Even landed a Muskie that was chasing a walleye with just a net. Holding on to hope for one late fall trip.

It might stink for you and him but for people on the other side it’s a good thing.

Yeah, unless you are the one losing your Canadian resort due to lack of business.

    Amen to that!

For those missing out on their annual Canadian fishing trips… No better time to explore what deep northern Mn has to offer than now. The Superior national forest and the BWCA have some amazing fisheries and hidden gems. There is world class fishing to be had in our own backyard if you’re willing to get off the beaten path.
