I have an opportunity to buy a 2008 Can Am xt 500 with 300 miles on it. Does anyone have one or had one? Hoping to get some pros and cons responses. On not going to use it for hard off riding.

yea i have a can am 500 2 up seat. other then changing the oil and a new battery it has been a super great machine. that thing goes through alot of snow, and i have worked it hard dragging and pulling deer and bear. it pulls a litghter 16 ft lund boat around with ease and i’ve hauled a pile of wood with it.the boat has a 9.9 motor on it. pulled our dock out with it too!!
i have had absolutely no issues with mine and i am pretty sure its around a 07-08.
June 22, 2018 at 4:10 pm #1781936the only bad thing i can say about it, is they sure know where a dumb place to put the battery, but then again they do it on there snowmobiles too!!!!!

LOL…you should see where Polaris puts its batteries on the new Sportmans.
Those Can Ams are nice machines!
June 22, 2018 at 4:17 pm #1781939I had a Bombardier 400 (same machine, smaller motor) and really like it. Lacked in the power department, but it pulled small trailers just fine. Never had a single issue with it.

Ain’t that the truth…

My 2015 is right under the seat. Where is it on the earlier ones? And when did they change it?
To the OP, love my Outlander!
June 22, 2018 at 11:18 pm #1781974I have a 11 outlander 800 and all I can say is it is one mean machine
June 23, 2018 at 6:01 am #1781984Well then they haven’t moved it
So you’re saying under the seat is a bad spot? Please explain. Seems like the most convenient location to me. Just unclip the seat and it’s right there. I’ve never had an issue.
June 23, 2018 at 9:59 am #1782013Mine is a 2 up seat so I don’t believe I can lift the seat. I have to get at it from the back end. When I put the new battery in, I also added a pigtail to hook up a battery tender with much more ease.
However I may need to look a bit closer but I am almost positive there isn’t any way to get at it from the top side.
June 23, 2018 at 12:23 pm #1782030Odd, I’ll have to check it out on the two-ups next time I see one.
Here’s how easy mine is to get at.

June 24, 2018 at 3:51 pm #1782159Thanks for the replies, I’m definitely going to pursue this machine
June 24, 2018 at 4:15 pm #1782160Let’s get all of our wheelers together and go for a ride. Hit the trails in Danbury or something. I bought my wife a 05 Honda rancher ( really it’s a early ice and late ice machine) but she wants to ride
June 27, 2018 at 8:29 pm #1782834So I pulled the plug on the 08 500 Outlander, 366 miles, for under 3g, did I do ok
June 28, 2018 at 2:22 pm #1783004I see what you mean Glenn, they also had a pigtail on it for a battery tender. They felt kinda bad because it had a little dust on it

June 28, 2018 at 3:38 pm #1783033That sounds like a very good deal on a reliable machine with thousands of miles left in it.
June 28, 2018 at 7:57 pm #1783065Sounds like a good deal. I’m no atv expert but seems like a good buy

what’s wrong with where they put the batteries on the Polaris now? My 2016 570 has been just fine with the battery down lower. It’s easy to get to and I’ve had it completely submerged multiple times with no issues, maby change is just hard for some.

Well,
1. Mounting a battery behind the front spar on the frame leaves the battery open to rocks and sticks…because who wouldn’t want battery acid to spill all over the frame when the case cracks? I assure you, battery cases aren’t all that hard to crack…Submerging is no problem, many ATV’s have their batteries submerged occasionally.
2. The cover they “attach” to it on 2015+ makes it a job you wouldn’t wish upon your worst enemy. The rubber strap and S hooks to hold down that cover is a PITA. Taking the battery out is easy peasy. Now put it back in…There was a 6+ page thread on the Polaris forums about how badly designed the placement is…
