Welcome to In-Depth.
I don’t have my maps at home with me so I’m not sure where thats located. I’m sure somebody will chime in.
I’m of no help as it’s further east than I’ve ever been.
This would probably be my favorite site that I’ve been to if it wasn’t for the dock. The dock is crap and way too shallow, will you only have one boat? If so what I have been doing is putting my boat sideways on the end like a T. I use 4 bumpers which pretty much makes the end a solid bumper and works out just fine.
I’ve never figured out how to catch big fish up there but pretty consistently catch a lot of fish and can always get enough 13 or 14 inch walleyes to have a good meal.

Are you planning on fishing both sides of the border? I feel like it took longer the first time I applied for a RABC permit for up on Rainy, probably be good to start that soon of haven’t already.
Looks like a pretty cool area, lots of structure and lots of shoreline.
Stopped for a look-see into this site for the first time last early July when we were camped at Rainbow island.
Not a bad site, some nice westerly views and just off the main channel into Sand Point.
Late June is usually kind of a transition time up there, fish moving from shallower water out towards reef areas (tho there are shallower eye’s all year long). There is shallow and deep reef area’s all around Pat Smith island that we caught both eye’s and smallies off of with lindy rigged leeches and crawlers last year. You can also pull spinners (orange/chartreuse/firetiger) to cover an area a bit quicker.
Another area a bit farther WSW of Pat Smith is the three sisters, a smaller reef complex.
Smallies and pike can be had casting rocky shorelines of bays and islands with flicker shads.
There was an abundance of 12.5″ eyes last year (my son and I must have gotten 30 off one area near camp in our 4 days on Rainbow), and those should be in that 14.5″ size now which are good for cooking up. Just an FYI, all eyes 17″ and bigger have to be released. We also got some sauger last year but none big enough to fry up.
Have a great time! I’m staying on the west end of Nam for my 2 July trips, and east end of Rainy for my August trip this year, so won’t get down that way. Good luck.

From this recent thread. I don’t think you need RABC permit anymore.

OK, I Officially have no idea what I’m doing..
That’s me everyday, no worries…

How is the dock at Rainbow? I had that one booked for this spring but I’ve never checked it out in person and I’m getting a little sick of it being hurricane winds every time we have to cross the big part of Namakan so I switched to a different site.

Can you get behind Namakan Island and travel thru Junction Bay?

It’s kind of my own fault because I always put in at the Ash River Visitor Center. See this map: https://i.imgur.com/z2QLycy.png
Depthfinder Island and Rainbow Island are a long drive from either Ash River Visitor Center or the Crane Lake Ranger Station. When you come from Ash River though you have a pretty long stretch of big water between Namakan Island and that upper right corner where a bunch of campsites are. The last couple times we’ve gotten unlucky and the weather has been really nasty on the ride back home, like every wave coming over the front, which isn’t fun when we are probably overweight with all the crap we bring. It wouldn’t be a problem if I put in at the Crane Lake Ranger Station but I’m worried about parking on busy weekends like memorial day or labor day when we go.
edit: that’s not actually rainbow island where I marked but it’s close.
I have my trailer on the Ash River Trail. Yes the bigger water can blow up once in a while. I would imagine with a boatload of camping gear and people it could get a bit hairy.
I’ve stayed on depth finder island several times! One of my favorite spots! The docks isn’t too bad. We were easily able to get two boats on it last time.
I’ll be up there about the same time. Pm me when time get close and I’ll sennd some great spots for bigger fish.
About 90% sure this is the dock on depth finder island. One boat on each side.
I think that is depthfinder but the water level is higher than when I was there. This is the only picture I can find that shows the point off to the left, those rocks on the end aren’t out of the water in your picture. I know my boat wasn’t level with the dock either.
For sure that water is way down there. My pic was from maybe 3-4 yrs ago on that site. I think early June 2015. I’m so ready to get back up there this summer!

Thanks Munchy! looks like it worked.
My boat is 20′-4″ fiberglass. So I tied it off the end of the dock so my hull wouldn’t hit the rocks. It worked well. This dock is well protected from the wind. Rainbow Island is a great site.
Anyone know anything about the Aspen Bench campsite?
Is fishing on the Canadian side worth the hassle?
We haven’t ever gone to the Canadian side. We plan to take on day to fishing Canadian side and another day to head over kettle falls to fish both sides on rainy.
Anyone ever use the lakemaster chip on the Canadian side? Is it as accurate as the US side?
The lakemaster chip has the Canadian side mapped and is accurate.

Dock is just fine at Rainbow, and very protected.
The site was redone in 2016, new tent pads and nice. Unfortunately we had the worst trip out we’ve had in almost 20 years. I’ve got a 18.5’ Tyee, and it was a terrible run from Fox island all the way to the other end. Big waves, rain so hard I could not see out the windshield. No fun for sure. Almost lost a cooler off the back of the boat.
We will be staying on the west end of Nam this summer, with a trip to East Rainy in August.
I’ve always gone out of Ash River too, and that big water section on east Namakan has kicked our butts more than once.
We’re leaving for Depth Finder tomorrow and I tried to PM you but not sure if it went through. If not we were wondering if you had any updated fishing info. Thanks Rick
Ricky,
I haven’t been up on Namkan this year yet. My first trip is July 7-11. Good luck. I would start at 12’ for eyes and work your way deeper. Trust your electronics and play the wind. For smallies, casting rocky shorelines with small cranks will put fish in the boat.
