Was up on Grand Mesa last weekend around 10.2K to camp all weekend. We wanted to get out, escape the heat, and also fish some new water we’ve never fished before. My GF and I got there Friday evening, and mostly just hung out and setup camp….Ate a lot of brats and smores lol. Did about 30 minutes of fishing but didn’t manage anything.
Next morning/afternoon was a different story…LOTS of trout landed! My GF was using a wide variety of presentations to success including 2″ micro minnows, the micro attack swimbait from Dynamic Lures, the HD Trout, and some fly fishing with a size 14 hand tied mosquito…I was using a dropper hopper setup the entire time. The damselflies were out in MASSIVE numbers and were mating…I also noticed a lot of caddisfly nymphs roaming around in the shallows. Like a lot of high elevation lakes, scuds are usually swimming around too. So I went with a size 12 Damselfly hopper, with a size 18 caddisfly nymph and my end nymph was a size 20 olive green scud. All 3 flies got A LOT of action, with me missing a lot more bites then landing but still more fish then I could count.
Mostly sunny weather with moderate winds throughout. With the amount of bug activity on the lake, the fish were jumping all over the place in a wide variety of depths…Highlight of the first part of the trip (This video) being I got my PB on the fly! A really fat and solid 20″ Rainbow that I had to kick over to the other side of the lake to get to…Belly boating life. Saw a really big swirl near some reeds, tossed my fly over and the biggin took the damselfly 🎣😀
Lots of fun highlights and fish catches, some scenic drone shots, a catch and cook with some of the trout we caught, and my GF’s dog Gideon. Come check out the action if you get time! Pictures below otherwise🎣
