I have a trip coming to the Hyatt Ziva in Cabo. I plan to do some surf fishing near the resort. Does anyone have any insight from past experiences on lures etc. that were effective.

Is this the Hyatt Ziva in Los Cabos? If so I stayed there about 5 years ago and it is top notch. I did not do any surfishing, the swells were pretty good size out there. I did do some body surfing and it was cool having some baby manta rays swim right along.

we booked a charter and had a really good trip catching school size yellow fins on light gear and i would highly recommend them. the hotel however wanted to charge like $50 a plate to cook our own fish so the bellboys went home with some real nice yellow fin back straps.

Here is the charter we used:

When are you going? Species will be dependent on time of year.

We caught mackerels right off the beach in front of the resorts. Get out super early in the morning because the bite is often over quick. If you have a car there are some good beaches to cast north of town on the pacific side and you will likely have the beach to yourself.

We casted heavy spoons that were silver and flashy. A giant cast master would work. There are some good bait stores in town and they will show you what to use.

$50 is ridiculous to cook fish. You shouldn’t pay more than $10. Get away from the tourist area and things are super cheap. You also get more of the flavor of real Mexico by getting out of the tourist area. We try to avoid there most of our trips. We stay in Airbnb’s a few miles from the marina and go to restaurants the locals go to. You won’t see many Americans in them.

You could also just eat your own sashimi. That’s what we do most nights.

If you need charter recommendations or other info shoot me a pm.

My FW and I just got back from Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos in San Jose del Cabo (about 20-30 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas). This place was excellent and by far the best all inclusive I’ve stayed at (I’ve been to like 4-5 others in MX and DR). Riptides were bad, so no swimming on the beach but they had plenty of pools to keep you cool. Food was awesome, and definitely could have done some shore fishing if I came prepared as I often saw rooster fish and a few other unidentified species right up to shore in the morning.

Seeing whales surfacing/jumping was basically constant, along with jumping manta rays flying out of the water. We sat thru a timeshare pitch at Pueblo Bonito (home of Quivira Jack Nicklaus GC), and got a fishing trip, sunset dinner cruise and bottle of decent tequila out of sacrificing a couple hours. Fishing trip was with Top Anglers Fishing, Capn Paco and Javi, and that was fun, only caught one Mahi Mahi, but saw 3 marlins that we couldn’t get to bite. Had Ziva cook it up blackened, grilled and fried along with sides for $25/person with sides and drinks (obviously, it’s an all inclusive), and no regrets! In general we prefer the Caribbean but I would go back here in a heartbeat. It was very reasonable, and sounds like tourism is WAY down there, so there are a lot of deals to be had!

This is a tough time of year to fish down there. Need a little warmer water before they really start snapping. I’m taking my brothers down there to fish in September. We’re heading up the coast a couple hours to fish through East Cape Resorts.

It’s a great area and there are some really cool little towns up the coast on the Sea of Cortez side.

Google “Jeff Klassen Cabo Fishing”. He is the real deal on Cabo surf fishing especially for roosters. He’s Bennison doing it for years. He also use to design lures. You might do better in surf off Cabo in Pacific rather than off San Jose del Cabo. Either can produce. Just don’t swim in Pacific side.

Ha…just some humorous reading for you following this thread. My wife and I went to San Jose over 20 years ago. We had been to Mexico a few times, were always very careful on eating/drinking bottled water etc. Anyway, we spent a week Saturday-Saturday and the last morning before the bus came to take us to the airport for the flight home, we went into Cabo for breakfast…(this is where the great vacation took a bad turn). We were walking down the main drag and here was a jolly guy out cooking scrambled eggs on the sidewalk outside his restaurant. I still remember him greeting us and saying “I’m Tio and this is my place”. If I saw Tio today, 20 some years later I’d probably be in jail for a long time! We sat down and I asked for a coffee and when she brought it, the cup had lipstick on the rim…like CSI fingerprint caliber detailed “lipstick print”! That was clue #1 to get the hell outta there but noooo…I give them the benefit of the doubt. She brings me cup #2 and it tasted like they’d just gone out back on one of the fishing boats and filled the pot from the bilge. We ate a passable breakfast and went on with our plans to leave. The SUV to take us to the airport was due at 1PM and about noon the the feeling of intestinal dread started to sink in. I was light headed and very tired…all I could think was please dont let me explode on the plane. We got back to our home and luckily I had not had an incident on the plane. We had to go to my parents house for a family function that evening and I was not well so I went and laid down in a spare bedroom. My wife woke me up, took me home and it went WAY south after that. A few days into the following week, I was told to bring a fecal matter sample in to be tested…there was no “matter”…just um…liquid ya know?? I ended up losing 2 weeks of work and 18 lbs from that trip! They never did come up with a definitive cause…just the dreaded Mexico curse. We’ve never been back. I know…I know…I’m just sharing my pain and hoping if the OP runs into Tio…he punches him for me!
