Heading up to the cabin on the Gunflint Trail to do a little filming. Going to be up there Wednesday night to Sunday. Hog walleyes are the target along with lakers and smallies. There is a special target on the walleyes. This area is know for huge walleyes. In fact the state record was caught 15 min from my cabin. That is our goal is a 17lbs 9oz horse of a walleye. This may sound like an unreasonable goal to some of you. However two years ago our neighbors Caught a 36 and half inch walleye! They didn’t have a scale so they let it go. This area also has a late spawn so they can be still holding eggs at this time. We have seen walleyes in the shallows that are well over 33 inches.
This is what we live for this is my favorite trip of the year. Hoping one day maybe not this trip or the next, but some day to have the state record. CAN’T STOP THE CHASE!

Good luck! I’ve got great memories from up there. Fished up there every year as a kid with my dad, we stayed at my dad’s buddies place Mike Berg owner and operator of Seagull Creek Fishing Camp.

Back from the Gunflint Trail. Another amazing trip. We caught a lot of fish but the walleye target fell short by a week. The walleyes we caught were all males including a 22 inch male. We heard the week before there was a 33 and two 34 inchers caught. So we kept 5 walleyes 15 to 18 inchers lost a few the same size. A few pike with the biggest being a 8 pounder. We saw some upper 30’s inch pike and lost a few of them. Smallmouth averaged 15-16 inches with the biggest being 18 and 18 3/4 that were 5 pounds. Lake trout fishing was good got a 6 pounder and 4 pounder the rest were a pound to 2 pounds.

Walleye fishing was at night in 2 to 5 FOW and used nothing but F-9 Raps in orange and firetiger. The water temp was 58 to 60 degrees. The females were out of there and the males were protecting there beds and some of them didn’t spawn so they must have not found a partner.

Trout fishing started hot at 40-50 FOW 25-45 feet down with water temps 43-47. Then the fish moved deeper to 60-70 FOW 35-50 feet down. We found the fish on inside turns next to reefs with the wind blown in to the inside turn. The best lure was gold and orange spoons.

Smallmouth were spawning in 60-64 degree water finding boulders near weeds in 2-8 FOW caught most dish on B-fish’n tackle moxies on an 1/8 oz jig.

Had an amazing time just one thing I must rant about for a sec. I saw a boat at night in the walleye grounds shining walleyes in the channel and when they would see walleyes they would try and catch them. Even when they were approaching us with there 1,000,000,000,000 candle power spot light shining in my eyes they didn’t even shut it off. The worst part is they had there kids shining for them! The next day when we were smallmouth fishing there was a DNR boat that checked us (good to see them so far up the trail) I informed them about the issue and they hopefully will find the guys. It sucks with the graphs and the fishing tech. now days people still have to poach.

I know this is a lengthy report, but I hope you enjoy it. This area is so underrated I cannot believe a fishing show doesn’t come up to this area. I will have pics to come I could not film because I forgot my camera. Thanks for reading, good luck and be safe.

    Nice report.
Be happy nobody does a fishing show up there. Crowds will follow the show airing and with crowds come the slobs. Poaching, littering, rudeness & noise. Enjoy what you have and protect it.😃

Up date from the guy shining walleyes. THEY CAUGHT HIM. I don’t know what the punishment is but in outdoor news under the cuffs and collars section under Grand Marrias section you will see that they caught them shinning for walleyes. Boy am I glad I told the DNR when I saw them.
