My wife and I live in the La Crosse area, Minnesota side of the river.

Our 8 year wedding anniversary is coming up, and I am looking for a rental place (cabin, cottage, chalet) on a lake that has good walleye and Crappie fishing.

She would like a hot tub & a fireplace, and I would like access to some good ice fishing. I can walk out or bring my ATV for fishing.

I have been looking in the following areas, Spooner, Chetek, Hayward, Mille Lacs, West Sylvia, as I have fished these areas, but I am not opposed to other areas.

Dates are kind of open but I am thinking anywhere in between January 10th through January 24th. Depending on price, Probably 3-6 nights.

Trappers landing is a Great place. That being said I don’t think Leech Lake is the easiest lake to get around or locate fish on in the Winter months. Not as many plowed roads and places to rent houses as some of the other large lakes. I would search on VRBO and find yourself a nice cozy place on a smaller lake.

I’d find a nice hotel in a bigger town/city like duluth, walker etc and do some things that’ll score FH points, then rent an ice sleeper for a night or two. Rather have a solid evening, night and morning on the ice then few hours here and there strung together fishing daily.

Trappers is real nice like stated. They usually have some roads out but like stated may have to baja some to get to other areas to fish. Mille lacs I would suggest Appledorns. Crappies will be hard to come by there.
Otherwise choose an area and check out a VRBO. Lots of lakes and options there.

I think Zipple Bay on LOW has a cabin with hot tub. No crappies, though.

Took your advice, we are heading up there this weekend. Any tips from anyone on fishing that area. I would be open to the bay or any lakes in the region. Not familiar at all with fishing in that region.

Call Marine General in Duluth and talk to them. They are on top of what is going on in the area and have a good selection of fishing tackle.

Anyone following this thread and is interested in Trappers, Josh is very much on top of the panfish bite on smaller lakes in the area.

This would be on the cheaper side but you could check out somewhere near Lake Castle Rock or Petenwell. Both offer good walleye and crappie. Maybe hire a guide one day and get an idea of spots to try. Green Water Walleye is a good one. There is a resort on Castle Rock “Northern Bay” plus lots of other VRBO options. Bite window is bankers hours especially on sunny days so you don’t have to get up crack of dawn. Will have no issues getting around on ATV and I think they are driving full size trucks out there still.

IDO did a show there last year check it out. Walleye fishing can be really good there and you get white bass, catfish and crappie.

Good luck where ever you go. I am waiting for border to open up and then heading to http://www.tamarackislandwildernesslodge.com/ for winter crappie and walleye with the wife. Well will be wife by then LOL.
