I am very passionate about fishing the BWCA. We went this past June and the smallmouth fishing was incredible. My number one piece of advice for this earlier part of the season is to fish river mouths. Big females stack up in these river mouths. For baits I’d use jerk baits, poppers, and wacky works. Here’s a video I put together of our trip this past June!

I’d also recommend torpedos or probably any prop bait if your casting, we catch the most numbers on those. Our biggest fish ALWAYS come when we are jigging walleyes and slide up 3-8 feet from where the walleyes are.

I LOVE the small mouth fishing up there. If you hit it right, it is lights out. I remember a trip when my son was 16, we were catching two at at time on our ORANGE Rapalas. I had never seen that before or since. Two fish on one lure. I agree with the river mouths, but look for the perfect rocks early in the season and then go deeper later in the summer. Oh yeah – on the trip with my son, he cast his lure into the brush close to the bank, and YEP, a fish jumped out of the water to get his lure. It was wild.
