Looking to purchase an semi-auto rifle, .224 Valkyrie. AR-15 platform.

Having never purchased a semi-auto, I’m a little undereducated regarding hoops to jump through.

Whether I buy online, or in a shop in MN or WI.
What do I need to do?

Will be my next prairie dog rifle.

    Thanks for any help.

Andy, if you buy outside of your home state, it will need to be shipped to a FFL holder in WI where you can make the purchase. Most times there’s a smallish up charge.

If you have a chance stop in to Cabela’s in Woodbury. Ask for Kirby. Very knowledgeable in AR’s and PD’s.

The first thing he will tell you is an AR doesn’t make a great PS rifle…and you should go with a bolt action. However if you want an AR, he can give you the over and unders of each manufacturer.

Worth the trip in information alone.

PS We’re leaving the 19th to dust a few dogs.

    Thanks Brian.

    I already have a bolt.
I hunt dogs differently than probably 95% of peeps.

I selected a 224 because of long range capabilities without generating the heat.

I also want semi so I don’t need to take eye off scope and long range doggy Target.

My style of dog hunting is to park the truck, pack a gallon of water and 400 rds… And start walking. Setup is fast and incredibly time efficient. From walking to scope on a dog in less than 10 seconds and back to walking in a jiffy.

    Here’s a picture from a week ago.

    He had fun!

And a picture of my setup

Btw I wouldn’t recommend going to the prairie after 4″ of rain in a week yay

the 224 valk isnt going to generate any less heat. fyi. You can fling heavy for caliber 223/556 if your wanting to buck the wind better and be wayyyy cheaper to shoot. The valk is a pretty interesting cartridge though so i dont blame you for wanting one!

It generates less than 22-250, 22 nosler, 6.5 cred. Etc. Less powder but better coefficient gets similar results with more rounds down barrel in less time.

My dog towns are getting pummeled with poison under new ownership. Making the 223 less of an obvious choice than it once was. Also looking for something that takes to the wind better when playing beyond 300 yds for those days it is blowing really hard.

I just know I’d get too hot too fast shooting a 22-250 or similar. And I do pack a barrel cooler and use it often as spring time pups are fast and furious shooting.

Easy to buy a gun… Another plus in the Wisconsin column … Next to multiple fishing lines )

I’ve come to discover that I’m hunting dogs a little different than most as well. I need to carry more water but that’s it. I walk, crawl, then belly creep right through the buffalo chips, but the bipod adjusts easily and silently to a ground that’s always firm. It’s like playing “sniper” because I’m usually shooting right through the grass blades when I turn them into “juice”.

Hunting in this manner, I’ve discovered that I have no need for high volume clips, or my AR15 in 5.56. I shorten the shot distance to such a great degree that I only shoot 2-4 rounds before I’ve either cleaned them out or they take cover for 10 minutes or longer. Plenty of time to reload a clip or in-stock magazine. For funsies though, I keep trying new calibers and I love “hunting” them more than long ranging from a bench rest.

Of you haven’t purchased yet, or others stumble into this thread looking for insight, in my opinion the best resource for knowledgeable folks in this part of WI can be found in St. Croix Falls at F-Bomb Ordinance. https://www.f-bomb.net/ besides carrying a variety of brands they also build rifles. If you’ve not done that before it’s not rocket science. The hardest part is researching who makes the higher quality components.

Drive right past Bill’s if you head north to F-Bomb. Every experience I’ve had with them regarding questions on rifles, suppressors or even handguns has been a poor experience from those muttonheads.
